24th December 1999.

The snow is settled on the ground like a blanket of the softest eiderdown. It is Christmas eve and the day of mine and Kate's wedding. There is such a crystalline joy in today, such a crispness to the frosty air and the periwinkle sky. The clouds are glitter, waiting to sprinkle joy everywhere.

I stand at the front of the hall, surrounded by warm candles and foliage and the scent of spiced apples floats across the room in pleasing ripples. Mine and Kate's families are just settling in their seats and beautiful music weaved through the air, creating a cordial atmosphere.

Glancing around, I spotted my mom and dad beaming at the front row, chatting to Sally and Kate's siblings Beth, Joss and Anna.

And then the music began.

A string quartet cover of My heart will go on. Cliche, I know. But me and Kate both felt as if our lives had come full circle with this song. It was the anthem of our love. The anthem of how we met and how we proposed to continue our lives and we wanted to make it count.

The congregation stood up, turning to the back of the room. I turned with them, spotting Roger dressed in a black suit, his arm tucked into Kate's.

I looked up at her. Kate was wearing this frost coloured lace dress with long flared sleeves and quickly became the epitome of elegance. She made her way towards me, smiling as she touched her hair which was neatly tied back and curled. Her cheeks reddened with happiness as she smiled her way towards the front, never taking her eyes off mine.

I felt my eyes prick with tears as the string quartet reached the last verse of our song.

I heard the lyrics in my mind, "We'll stay forever this way," as she passed the flowers to Beth and lifted her dress to join me on the stage. She pressed a kiss into Roger's cheek, whispering a thankyou to him.

"Hey sweetie, you look stunning."

"Thank you, darling. You're not looking too bad yourself."

We exchanged a laugh before turning to the reverend.

"Welcome to all who have gathered here today to share in this marriage ceremony of Kate and Leonardo These words, spoken today between Kate and Leonardo are indeed important and sacred, but they are not what joins these two together, nor is this marriage ceremony. We are not here to witness the beginning of their relationship, but to acknowledge and celebrate a lasting bond that already exists between them. Kate and Leonardo have already joined their hearts together and chosen to walk together on life's journey, and we have come to bear witness to a symbolic union and a public affirmation of the love they share.

If anyone can show just cause why they may not be lawfully wed, speak now or forever hold your peace."

I looked at Kate as the room remained silent and smiled, gripping onto her hand harder as I looked towards our moms, who were both crying.

"The formal exchange of your wedding vows is the most ancient part of a wedding ceremony.

These are the words that couples for centuries have spoken to one another and, while they are very simple words, they have extraordinary meaning and importance.

As you speak them to one another, you will discover that these are truly sacred promises, and sacred promises must be kept forever. Now, I understand that you've both written your own vows. Am I right in saying that?"

"Yes, Sir." Kate replied, staring directly into my eyes. Neither of us had heard each other's vows yet and I was beside myself in excitement to listen to hers and read mine to her.
