Low effort chapter because College has left me with zero motivation to write (or do anything).
.[July, 2004]
I walked over to him, a cold mug of tea in hand and placed it on the side. He was just boiling the kettle, preparing to make more.
I buried my head into his neck, overcome with fatigue, and he immediately put the spoon from the sugar down and wrapped his arms around me.
"You tired, hmm?"
He mumbled, sweeping some hair from my face and I nodded, sighing as my eyes closed for what felt like the twentieth time that hour. I relished in his touch as he continued to stroke my hair.
"You're gonna send me to sleep doing that." I groaned, fighting to stay awake.
"Why are you so tired anyway? It's only," he paused to look at the clock, "ten am."
"Yeah, but I was up all night with Joe. His teeth are hurting him, poor boy."
"Sweetie." He sighed, bringing me closer. "You should've woken me up."
I shrugged, lowering my gaze to the floor and biting my lip.
I've never been one to ask for help. I like doing things myself.
"How are you going to work on one cup of tea and an hour of sleep, hm?"
He cups my face, darting his eyes between mine, watching my face fall.
"I'll manage." I whisper, my voice hoarse with dread. I didn't want to go to work, I didn't want to leave my husband and my children. But I had to. I needed work and work needed me.
"Take the day off. I'm sure they'll manage." He replied, as if reading my mind.
"No, I-"
"Katie, you need to rest."
I sighed and rubbed my forehead, giving in. "Fine."
"You work too hard, sweetie." He mused, fondling my cheek again. "You deserve a break."
"There's only three months left of this shoot, then I'll have a break. I need to go in today."
"But you just agreed to rest."
I walked to the sink and splashed myself with some water before turning back to him, rubbing my face dry with a tea towel.
"I just can't abandon it now, darling. I have to finish what I started."
"But your health is more important than a movie, isn't it? I'm sure the director would understand that." He poured the boiling water into our mugs and stirred it.
"He might. But still-"
"You're staying home."
"But-"
"You're staying home."
"For god sake." I mumbled, rolling my eyes and taking my mug of tea into the living room.
No matter my discontent at that moment, I knew he was right. I knew he only wanted the best for me.
"I'm sorry sweetie, but you have to look after yourself sometimes." He sat beside me, laying an arm across my shoulders and placing his mug on the table beside mine to cool down.
"You do everything for everyone else but won't allow yourself the same thing as you give us; time."
"I know."
"You need to have a break, baby."
"I know."
I slumped into the sofa, giving up and resting my head on Leo's lap.
"Did mum pick up Mia and Joe this morning?"
"Yes she did." He whispered, rubbing the pad of his thumb up and down my forehead. "Do you need anything, sweetie? Are you warm enough?"
"I'm okay. Thank you, darling."
"Sleep well, I love you."
I closed my eyes then, smiling as I drifted off to sleep. In a short time, I heard his gentle snores too and his heart slow to a gentle tempo.
It was all perfect. All at peace. All at serenity.
