I just want Harry and his friends to like me. I don't care about his fame, I just care about my childhood friend.
"I'm sorry, Via" he says, using my childish nickname and I chuckle. "Do you want to start spending time with us? 'Mione wants to have a new friend and Ron is curious about you." Ron. The ginger one. "Okay. Yes, okay." I can't contain my excitement.
"But, Via... if you want to stay with us... you can't be with Malfoy too. People would start talking and they already talk about me enough. I'm sorry, God, I just sounded Malfoy!" he laughs briefly. I think about Draco and his expression when he kissed me, but then I realise I've known him for some days while I've known Harry for so long. I nod. "Yes, of course. Not that I stay with him anyway, also."
Hogwarts is a great place if you have real friends to live it with. I understand now why Bella's family didn't like it here. I bet nobody liked them. Typical. And I'm proud Dad and his relatives were actually loved here. It makes me feel loved too.
"Mrs Black? Are you listening?" Professor Sproute asks me. I nod and hide the drawing I was scribbling, but when she stops looking, I send it to Harry. He opens it: inside I just drew him with a ridiculous face and wrote, "You're cute. XOXO". We always used to flirt as a joke when kids, because we saw adults do it around us. He looks over at me and chuckles, showing Hermione and Ron the drawing. I'm not sitting with them because I took a place when I was still with Daphne, but she changed it and that's why I'm all alone now. I don't mind, though. I love thinking.
"Professor?" Draco raises his hand and we all look in amazement. Draco never listens to any lessons except Snape's, but he always has top marks.
"Yes, Mr Malfoy?" Sproute seems just as astonished as we are. "Black is distracting me. She keeps sending notes to Potter" he says, biting a green apple he's holding.
Everyone looks at me and then at Harry and I blush. Harry frowns, not even looking at Malfoy. "Professor, that's not true. She just asked me something about the Quidditch match we have later." "I didn't know Mrs Black was a Quidditch player." "She's going to try out today. And then she'll play, I'm sure." "Well, you two can talk about Quidditch in your free periods, alright? We wouldn't want Mr Malfoy to be distracted." Professor Sproute, just like any other professor who isn't Slytherin, loathes our House, but since I'm friends with Harry, they usually just ignore me. The same isn't for Draco, though. And I'm actually happy. He deserves it. He literally just wanted to get me into trouble.
Harry looks at me mouthing, 'See? He sucks.' I nod and then start listening to the lesson, turning just once to see Draco looking at me with hate and rage. I shrug. I don't care. He's a spoiled rich kid and comes from everything I hate of my family. I don't want, or need to be near him.
"Harry, you weren't serious about Via trying out for Quidditch right?" Ron says after lessons. Harry raises an eyebrow. "Why not? Who do you think I learned from?" "Sirius?" Ron says, in an obvious tone. I shake my head and nod contemporaneously, which makes Hermione giggle. "I learned from... Sirius and then I taught Harry." "Oh, we didn't know you know Sirius too! Well duh, actually that's pretty normal right?" Fred, the big brother of Ron, says, appearing near me. Harry and I exchange looks but don't say anything.
"Anyway, you aren't made for Quidditch" Ron continues, and Hermione elbows him, outraged. "Why? Because she's a girl? Because I remember you-" "What? No!" Ron says, but he seems a bit taken aback. "It's just... you look like a little bird. All weak, you know." Hermione and I roll our eyes at the same time. "See, they always do this. It's unnerving" George, Fred's twin, says, walking near us. "I'm sorry. Are we too trying and smart for you folks?" Ginny, Ron's sister, says. I know. They're a lot. "Oh wow. Okay then. Is this a bet? Let's bet" Ron says. "I say Olivia doesn't make it into the team." "I say she does." "So do I." The girls support me. "Bro?" Ron looks at Harry. "I mean, Ron... I've seen her play... I am with the girls." "Same" Fred and George say at the same time and Ron sighs. "Really? Okay. We'll see."
"Harry, anyway, what position should I try out for?" I ask him five minutes before. Him and I know we're both good enough to play in any position so I don't really care. "Well, as you know, I'm a Seeker. Malfoy is too." "Oh." I breath. "Can I be a Chaser then?" I ask. Harry smirks. "You really don't like Malfoy, do you? I'm so proud of you!" he strokes my hair and I breath out, annoyed but smiling. "Let's go now. I have a bet to win."
When we arrive to Quidditch Camp, Harry goes near his Captain, Wood, and I go near mine, Flint. I don't like him but I need him to appreciate me to enter the team. "Okay, everyone. As you know, today Gryffindor will play against Slytherin in the tryouts. I'm sure you know we'll also have a real match later. Everyone who wants to change position or is trying out, please, step ahead." I do so, as do some other students I've barely seen around. I turn back to see if Daphne or Astoria, the only ones I know of in my House, are playing, but I see another painfully familiar face. Pansy Parkinson is standing beside me, with a fleer.
"How is it going, Black? Are you ready to lose your position?" she says. "You're trying to be a Beater?" I ask, naively, looking at her bat. She snickers. "God, you're so sweet. Obviously, no. I'm not really trying out." I am astonished and look behind her, where Draco is. He's looking at me and I can't understand what they're up to. "What's up, Black?" he says. "Are you scared?" I shake my head but I can't stop my legs from slightly trembling. I lift up my chin and go in front of him. "I'm going to win, asshole."
