Grace
It all started four days later. Four days after the weirdest test I've ever had.
I was divergent. The test told me that I could be happy in seven different districts. Including my own. I hadn't told Riley this yet.
Dammit, I keep getting ahead of myself. If you haven't figured it out yet, Riley's the better storyteller. I always get ahead of myself. It's quite annoying.
Anyways, the Institute got a call from the Clave themselves. There was a demon rampaging the district, which was actually pretty common. We had no idea why the Clave was making it such a major issue, so, of course, we obliged.
When we got to the main city of Shorthorn- or really, the only city that had more than a hundred people- the signs of the demon were obvious. Suddenly, a foggy form flew by.
"It can't be...," I said in disbelief.
"Moloch," Riley continued.
"A Greater Demon?" Dad asked in disbelief. "How?"
"No idea," Amber, Riley's mom, added. "The last time a Greater Demon rose was when that Morgenstern kid was on the loose. I think it was Lilith."
"How do we kill fog?" John asked impatiently.
"We can't. Even if we could, Moloch is a Greater Demon. They can't be killed," I replied.
"Since when do you study Greater Demons?" Riley asked.
"When was the last time you read the Codex?"
"A while ago," everyone replied in harmony.
I glared at all of them.
"So, Jonathan, Jezebel, you guys go on the right side of town and lead Moloch to the center of town if he heads towards you." I tell a Blackthorn and a Lightwood.
"Dad, John, Amber, you take the right. Lead Moloch to the center if he strays out towards y'all."
"I'm gonna go get Magnus, and maybe see if he has a spell. After that, Riley and I will take the center."
"No," Dad and Amber said at the same time.
Riley and I both rolled our eyes. "It's the only way we can catch Moloch! Stop being so protective!" we said in sync.
Jonathan's eyes widened. Everyone else, except Jezebel- the bitch-started to laugh.
"Got us there," Dad replied.
"Hurry back," Amber added.
"We will," Riley and I replied.
"So...Moloch," Riley said when we were well out of earshot. "And Magnus will just happen to have a spell?"
"He's a very powerful warlock. It's said that he helped with the Morgenstern problem." I shrugged. "He got people out of Hell-literally. I say he might be able to help."
Riley cocked an eyebrow. "Is this about the fact that he's a powerful warlock or that you think he's cute?"
I stopped walking to slap his arm. "The fact that he's a 'shadowhunter friendly' warlock! Though, I suppose, his hotness does play in..."
Riley made a disgusted face and started walking again. "Sorry I asked."
After a couple minutes of walking, Riley and I arrived at the Institute.
"Wanna grab your crossbow?" I asked him.
Riley took out a small leather pouch from his pocket. "Got it already. Like I'd go demon-slaying without it."
