Riley
Choosing Day was an extremely chaotic day. Every sixteen-year-old in the entire Republic was there, plus seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds; they're the ones that show the transfers the ropes. Parents of the sixteen-year-olds were also there.
While everyone in the thirteen districts was talking excitedly, Grace Raine and I just sat there awkwardly. I still couldn't wrap my head around it. Grace was no longer a shadowhunter; by default anyways. She still has angel blood in her, even if it was hidden.
I made a confused face, and Grace Raine squeezed my hand in reassurance. She was saying something, but it got drowned out by the amplified voice of our President.
"Citizens, welcome to Choosing Day. Whether you're here to decide your future, or to show the newbies the ropes, we welcome you," she said. "Today is the day where you leave your childhood behind. Today is the day where you decide your future! Will it be in Hedonism," cheers from the Hedonism sector, "Ashlar," less cheers from the Ashlar sector, but still a lot, "Erudite," the most cheers in a sector so far, "Aquatica," whoops and hollers from their sector, "Galvanism," weak cheers from the sector, "Ostracism," almost no cheers from the sector; everyone hates it there, "Galumph," cheers erupted from the sector, "Candor," cheers from half of the sector, "Abnegation," claps from the adults, "Shorthorn," weak hurrahs from Grace and I, "Amity," enthusiastic cheers from the citizens, "Anthracite," weak cheers from the entire sector, "or Dauntless," complete and utter chaos erupted from the sector.
After waiting for the Dauntless to calm down, President Scarlett continued. "The first person who will decide their fate is Carthen Addams." An Erudite boy stepped forward. He chose to stay.
I then pretty much tuned out the ceremony. Grace and I were discussing something- I think about warlocks- when a Candor boy transferred. He chose Ashlar.
"Congratulations, for being our first transfer!" Scarlett said. The Candor boy nodded and walked over to Ashlar. I heard a feminine cry from the Candor section.
Scarlett ignored the wailing and called the next name: "Grace Carstairs."
I paled. I had totally forgotten that Grace Raine would be choosing first. I gave her a reassuring hand squeeze before she walked up onto the stage.
Scarlett handed Grace Raine a small knife- you must drip a drop of blood onto the object that represents the district. Grace took it unsteadily. Without hesitation, she walked over to the bowl that had smoking coals- not to be confused by the Dauntless' burning coals- she looked above me at Charles, and cut her hand. The blood seemed to fall in slow motion, but then it landed on the coals. Weak cheers came from Anthracite as Grace Raine walked over. A young man- probably eighteen- greeted Grace and showed her a seat. She sat down.
As the next name was being announced, Charles whispered in my ear. "Why's she going towards the werewolves? What did you tell her?"
I was shocked. First off, I had no idea that Grace Raine hadn't told her dad that she had turned; I mean, even my mom knew! Second, I couldn't process that Charles was blaming me for her leaving. How was I supposed to explain to him? He wouldn't have believed me.
I turned around and looked at my mom. She gave me a look back that told me she would tell Charles about Grace Raine. I sighed in relief and turned back around. Mom had just finished telling Charles everything when "Riley Fairchild" was said. I basically ran to the stage so I could avoid questions from Charles.
I didn't even wait for President Scarlett to give me the knife. I took it from her hand, walked towards the smoking coal, and cut myself. All in about ten seconds. Scarlett glared at me as I walked to Anthracite; I think I had made a powerful enemy without trying.
The Anthracite citizens greeted me confused as I headed towards Grace Raine; hardly anyone transferred to Anthracite. I ignored them and sat down next to Grace; someone had given me their seat.
"Your dad knows," I whispered to her.
"What?!" She whisper-yelled.
"Sorry," I mouthed since someone above shushed us.
Grace Raine didn't look at me for the rest of the ceremony. I wanted to say something to her, but the words faded as soon as they hit me. Come to the end of the ceremony, she walked up to a guy our age without looking back. I understood that she was mad, but still. It hurt that she'd rather spend time with a random stranger.
Head down, I trailed behind Grace Raine and the other guy. Suddenly, a guy maybe a year or two older than me came up next to me. I didn't bother looking at him.
"That your girlfriend or somethin'?" he asked, inclining his head at Grace.
I blanched. "Grace?! NOOO!"
He laughed. "Just thought I'd ask. Name's Dayton."
I took a good look at Dayton. He had chocolate brown eyes and hair as bright and yellow as the sun. "Riley," I said.
