Aideen and I had fallen asleep on the couch, but something felt off. My legs were sweating, which I chalked up to the warmth of our bodies pressed together. But then it got worse. My legs were... wet?

I blinked awake and glanced down. Aideen was still sound asleep, unusually peaceful for someone who, most nights, struggled to sleep with our boys kicking her bladder. That's when I saw it—her dress was soaked.

"Baby, wake up," I said, poking her gently.

She groaned, barely acknowledging me. "Hmm?"

"I think your water broke!" I said, trying to stay calm.

"What time is it?" she mumbled, still half-asleep.

Is this woman serious? I thought. Our boys are on their way, and she's asking about the time? "Time? Aideen, your water broke! We need to go to the hospital!"

In her sleepy voice, she replied, "A woman can dilate at about 0.5 centimeters per hour. I've gotta be at least 6 centimeters before we head to the hospital." She waved me off, her eyes already closing again.

I stared at her, bewildered. Was she really trying to fall back asleep?! I wasn't having any of it. I jumped up, grabbed her legs, and put them on my shoulders.

"Harrison!" she shrieked, suddenly wide awake. "What are you doing?"

I didn't answer as I lifted her dress and pulled down her underwear, panic setting in.

"HARRISON!!" Aideen screamed.

Before I could fully process what was happening, the adrenaline surged through my body, and I felt light-headed. My vision blurred as the reality hit me: I saw the baby's head.

Everything went black.

When I came to, Aideen was slapping my face frantically. "Harrison, wake up!" she cried, relief washing over her as I blinked back into consciousness.

"You fainted," she said, exhaling in relief. "But you saw the baby's head, right?"

Head? Baby?

Oh. Fuck.

The image of what I saw flashed back in my mind—the baby's head, how stretched and sore everything looked. My stomach churned, and before I could respond, I blacked out again.
