The next morning came; Wei Wuxian had fallen into deep sleep.

When Lan Wangji tried to wake him up for breakfast, he looked up at him with huge blank eyes and turned his back to him again.

He spent the day in bed, not moving, not talking to anyone. This went on for the next two days, and while the House was being decorated all in red for the New Year's Day celebrations, Lan Zhan was watching him grow pale and thin, and all the red looked like an ocean of blood that was threatening to swallow them alive.

Jiang Cheng came and tried to talk to Wei Ying, and also Lan Xichen, but he couldn't move. They called for a doctor, but he said that there was nothing wrong with him – he was just too weak. Lan Zhan tried to feed him soup and bathe him, and he just let himself be handled, like a living doll.

His eyes were empty, and he never spoke a word. Everyone was wondering about it, and only Lan Zhan knew why all that was happening – he had gone too far. He was sitting by the bed, crying almost all the time, his heart and soul were crushed. He was whispering the softest words to his husband, but there was no reaction, his stupor remained.

There were two days until New Year's Day, and the miracle Lan Zhan was praying for happened  –  it was an early morning, and he was holding him in his arms, trying to keep him warm and safe, when Wei Wuxian looked up and said in a hollow voice:

- I want to go home. I need to be with my son.

- Darling...  -  Lan Wangji was shaking, kissing his face all over.  –  Wei Ying, you came back to me... Oh, Gods!!!  Sweetheart, you are home... This is home...  -  he was murmuring through tears.

- I need to go home, to Gusu. Alone.  –  he said.

Lan Wangji felt his own body very cold and very numb, as if all his blood had suddenly frozen, stopped, or become lead.

He shuddered and said sadly:

- Yes, my love. Alright.

Jiang Cheng was gaping, looking at his own servants preparing a horse for his brother.

- What is the meaning of this?! Hanguang-Jun, why is this moron leaving? He is too weak to ride!

- I know.  –  Lan Zhan said briefly.

- What about you? Don't tell me he is going alone?!  –  he yelled, aghast.

- It is his wish, Sandu Shengshou.  –  Lan Zhan said sadly.

- But Zewu-Jun said...  –  he was staring at Lan Wangji, unable to believe his eyes.

- I know.  –   Lan Zhan said, turning his back to him and returning to their room.

He stayed there for days. Lan Xichen was worried sick as he was watching his brother silently slip into a coma that same night. He was expecting this  –  they could not be too far apart for too long, and now they were kilometers way.

Jiang Cheng was fuming:

- The idiots!  Now none of them can function! What was all that about?! Do you know? – he mumbled.

Lan Huan shook his head  –  his brother had absolutely refused to comment on any of it.

He said seriously:

- Wanyin, their core will die if they stay apart for too long... And once it dies... they too will die.

- What do we do?  -  Jiang Wanyin asked sternly.

- We need to get my brother to Gusu. We need to save their lives. Can you imagine? Now that Wei Qianbei will be closer to the baby  –  his energy will be even lower. And he has been so sick lately... Darling, I fear we might even be late...  -  he lifted his eyes to look into his lover's eyes, and his face expressed fear.

- What... What happens if one of them dies... now that they share a core...?  –  Jiang Cheng asked, scared.

- No half core can exist. I know that for sure.  –  Lan Xichen said, very pale.

Jiang Wanyin started preparations for a trip right away.

The servants were scared  –  he looked terrifying when angry.

A carriage was prepared in no time, and they started off, travelling light. Jiang Wanyin left instructions for Lan Sizhui to follow them to Gusu, hoping that there was enough time, gnashing his teeth at the thought of how much trouble Wei Wuxian always created wherever he went.
