Rowan and Micheal had science. The teacher who Rowan didn't know the name of asked everyone to write their names on a bit of paper and put it in his hat at the front in a way to decide groups for a project.
"Sooo class I've been told you need to do something else for coursework." The teacher started, "So in groups build me a scale model of a festival ride and by the end we'll have a whole little fair!"

Rowan wasn't listening, he would always have his head on the table and the teacher never noticed. By this point Micheal left him as well, waiting for him to sit back up to talk to him.

Near the end of the class everyone went to the front to pick out a name (I don't think the teacher thought it through). Rowan took the opportunity to leave.
"You not gonna see who your with?" Micheal asked.
"No." Rowan smiled, "Oh, and I put your name in like five time. Bye!"

He avoided the rest of the day by taking a walk to the park at the bottom of the islands mountain. (It's not big enough to be a mountain but saying 'Holy Hill' is so much more uncool then saying 'Holy Mountain')

He followed the path along the cliffs on the coast. He watched his feet and the water to his right when we saw something splash and its tail dive down into the water.
'Mermaid?' He thought. It splashed a little more and poked its head out the water.
"Oh." Rowan sighed, seeing it. Its big nose and black eyes staring at the boy above. For a second Rowan thought it was a dog but quickly realised it was just a seal. A big dopey seal, staring at him. Rowan stared back, thinking it looked cool.
It swam back down and Rowan felt like an idiot for thinking a dog was just having a swim.

For a reason Rowan didn't know, that night he felt more shit then usual, so wanted to message Piper.
The two didn't talk that much, although they'd always think about it, it's just they had nothing to say. Whenever they wanted to talk to one another they'd come up with a reason or a funny story to tell.
She was right there by his side but so far away.

The day before, Rowan was walking through town when he heard two people arguing.
"I've had enough of you!" One said and stuck a stamp on the others head, which sent him back and falling into a postbox.
A postman then came around and opened it, taking the letters and the man.
"Wait! I'm not a letter!" The man yelled.
"Yea right." The postman laughed, throwing the man over the shoulder.

Rowan would always think about her. Her short blonde hair, the way she used to sing. He'd think about the way her smile went to one side and the better times they'd passed, now she was the other side of the country.

He turned his phone off and sat against his bed. It was one of them nights. He had that feeling. A feeling he could never put into words, nor understand, even when he felt it.
His best guess was a mix of sadness and happiness and worry and a knowledge that nothing was happening.
He'd been doing nothing since Piper left. Living the same old day. November turned to January before he knew. Nights blended together but he felt no fear of time, he felt no time at all.

As always he stuck his head out of his window and he watched the town below him glow in the dark. From his window it seemed bigger then it was. Like a good photo, not knowing what it's like from any other angle, but going to it ruins the magic, seeing that it does exist, and seeing that the world carries on past it.
He stayed in the window until he couldn't keep his eyes open, with a worry on his mind.
