Following the design and makings of the jet boots he had (and using whatever he could find in the back of Fields car) Rowan had made a second pair of jet boots, nearly identical to the first.
It only took him a week and it brought him into February when he finally got them working. He took them to the others, in his hiding spot near the waterfall and flew up with them. Not higher, he just wanted to know that they worked.
He was in his own head most days now, on autopilot walking around school, which is how he bumped into a sixth form girl.
The students around him gasped and gawked at him as the girl threw herself to the floor and dropped her books a second later.
Micheal was with Ire and they both saw the scene taking place.
"You prick!" One kid yelled.
"Get him!" Another yelled.
Rowan ran past Micheal and Ire before they ran after him to not be trampled by the stampede of students flooding the halls after them.
They found Tom and Wolf and they followed them as they ran across the field behind the school and hopped the green fences."What was that!?" Tom laughed.
"Rowan bumped into this girl and a swarm of her simps chased us all out." Ire explained.
Rowan sighed, getting up.
"I'm going." He said.
"Fair, day's nearly over now." Ire said.
"I'm gonna go back, Kate's staying after school." Micheal explained.
"Cool." Rowan said, not listening. He turned and walked in the opposite direction of his house.
"Where's he going?" Ire asked.Rowan went again to the waterfall, but he wasn't alone. Wolf, suspicious of him, went as well. She followed from a distance until he got to an opening and put on his flying outfit and big blue boots.
"What the fuck?" Wolf said making herself known through the trees and making Rowan jump out his skin.
"Wh-y-wh... huh?" Rowan started a few sentences. He tried to cover up his outfit but couldn't.
"What is this? What are you doin'?" Wolf interrogated him.
"Um... well, what are you doing? Why are you following me? Go away!" Rowan yelled.
"No. You're gonna tell me what's goin' on!" She demanded, getting up in his face.
"Like you deserve the truth?" Rowan said smugly.
"You're weird! You're up to something!" She went on, "Why else... just... what are you gonna do?" She yelled, picking at his stupid outfit.
"Nothing!" The boy laughed.
"What is this, your beddin'?" She grabbed his cape.
"No!" Rowan yelled, embarrassed now, "It's... I..." He gave up trying to explain himself.
"Well?" Wolf said, crossing her arms.
Rowan sighed.
"Let me show you." He said softly.
"Wh- no y-" She yelled.
"JUST..." He sighed, "Let me show you."
Wolf raised an eyebrow but let the boy continue. He got out the other pair of big boots from a place hidden in a bush and got Wolf to put them on. Strapping them around her ankles tightly.
"Okay, um... give me your hands." Rowan said.
Wolf just stood in the boots and felt silly as Rowan stood in front of her reaching out his left hand. She took his hand and the boy bent down and turned the two pairs of boots on manually.
"Wait wait- what's-" She stuttered.
"It's okay." Rowan reassured her.
The boots began to shake and Wolf had to put effort into not falling over. The boots gave a loud noise and before she could complain, she found herself off the ground. Now holding both Rowans hands she saw the boots had lifted the two of them and they were a few feet off the ground.
The blasts from the boots weren't unbearable to her ears, which surprised her because they were keeping her off the floor, but she saw under her the boots only blew the grass around and the bramble away. She looked back to the boy in front of her who was waiting for her reaction. She just laughed. It was the only thing she could get out. She couldn't believe what was happening, even though she knew it was real.
She just laughed in disbelief. She looked at Rowan, then his hands. She had to double take because she noticed bandages on his wrists, underneath his shirt and jumper.
Rowan must have caught on because he lowered himself to the floor by moving his feet around.
He stood there a moment.
"...I need my hand." He said softly.
This brought Wolf back into the moment and she felt how tight she was clinging onto Rowans hands. She let go of his right hand and he flipped a dial on Wolfs boots.
"FUCK." He yelled and struck his hand away, shaking it. Wolf was lowered to the floor and her boots stopped shaking.
"Rowan?" She asked, not moving.
Rowan shook his hand violently and swore under his breath. His breathing was heavy and purposefully slow, as if trying to calm himself down. He looked at his right hand and the tips of his first three fingers were swollen and shon a bright red. He closed his first tightly.Their boots cooled down and they put their shoes back on.
"Come with me." Rowan said.
He led her just around the corner."It's called the waterfall." Rowan told. "It used to be a lot nicer, there wasn't shit everywhere. And it was warmer, back then."
The two sat in the chairs, Rowan in a beach chair and Wolf tried to get comfortable in a camping chair.
She sat, trying to come up with a way to start talking about what she'd just experienced.
"Me and Piper would always come here." The boy said.
"Why do-" Wolf began, "H- Why- why did you start flying?"
"Oh... um, I just- I dunno, I just wanted to I guess."
"You just wanted to?"
"Well yea, haven't you never wanted to?" He asked.
"...I guess. I never thought about it."They both looked at the dull sky, through partings in the branches and their leaves. A moment of silence passed, neither of the kids could tell if it was awkward of not, and the fact they were thinking about it didn't help them figure it out.
"Do you ever feel like there's more to the world then we're told?" Rowan asked in the most sincere tone Wolf had heard from him.
She looked over to him with a worried look. Rowan saw and looked away.
"I don't really like thinkin' about stuff like that." Wolf replied.
"Oh." Rowan sighed, looking up at the sky and the clouds.
"Why?" She asked.
"No, no nothing. Just thinking y'know."
That feeling he'd become familiar with now came back, as if a pair of eyes were on him, from all around.
"Ire and Tom are into that kinda stuff," Wolf went on, "I just... don't really like it. Is that why you wanted to fly?"
"Don't tell them." Rowan said quickly. "About anything. That I fly."
"No?"
"Don't... please." He said. "...it's better if no one knows."
He got up and said goodbye.
Wolfs eyes narrowed as she watched the boy walk away.
