"There's nothing strange." Said Ire.
"No..." Rowan closed a book.
He sat back and Ire joined him at the table. The two were in the schools library pretending to revise.
"I mean, what do we even look for?" She asked herself.
"Ughhhh." Rowan sunk in his chair until he was eye level with the table, "I dunno... anything weird."
"I mean they're not gonna put anything in books are they? Science books. That they make."
"No..."
"What have you looked at?" She picked up Rowans books, "The Planets, Astrology- Space twenty sixty nine? What's that?"
"Unhelpful. Is what it is."

Luckily Tom came rushing in with news, not about the sky but fun news.
"There's a new monster! Big hairy thing!" She exclaimed.
Ire got Tom to sit down to get the glares of other students off them.
Tom told the monster had been on the news and attacking people in T-Bay so they decided to go after it.
"Where's Wolf?" Tom asked.

Wolf was in the gym. Most lunch times by this point.
Her knuckles took more of a beating then the punching bag, it's only no one matched her in tennis because how hard she'd swing.
She took a break when she got a message from Ire.

The four left school with a warm spring in their step.
"Rowan are you gonna wear your costume?" Tom asked, "The cape, the helmet and that."
"What?" He laughed, "How'd you know about that? And, no. It looked stupid."
Wolf looked away.
"Oh what!? No it looked awesome!" She defended, "We have to have defining things. You had that awesome cape."
"What's your defining thing?"
"Uh, my Taid gave me this awesome coat but it's too warm, but I got this."
She took out her hair clips causing the repressed spikiness of her hair to burst out and she covered it again with a tin foil hat.
"Ha, mad."
"Now I'm safe." She grinned.
"You should wear your hair like that more often." Ire smiled.
"Yea?"
"Not the hat, but ye- it's awesome."

Rowan got his bike and they went down T-Bay like last time.
A man in Spra told them the beast was over the bay so they went further and took a break to catch their breath.

"There!" Tom yelled.
The trees were shaking and a mass moved under them.
The kids hid behind a big rock and watched it skulk through the woods a bit away.
"It looks horrible!" Ire whispered.
"It's alien." Rowan used as an adjective and felt cool about it.
It came towards the bay and to a ledge. They could only see its silhouette, along with a group of bird watchers with their back to the beast.
"What's it doing?" Ire asked.
It crept towards the group.
"It's gonna pounce!" Wolf realised.
That second Rowan burst forward, letting his jet boots add a meter to each step.
"RUN!" He yelled getting everyones attention.
He burst forward and kicked the beast, sending it tumbling back with a loud blast.
The group ran away but were sure to pick up their cameras and bags before fleeing for their lives.

The girls caught up to Rowan and saw the beast at the bottom of the hill pick itself up.
"We have to go!" Wolf yelled.
"We can't it's gonna go after people." Ire said.
"Yea, we're people!"
"You don't have the sword do you?" Rowan asked.
"......"
"Fuck." He sighed, "Get back."

They could see the beast better. Its long strands covered its face and bounced as it charged up the hill.
It rose in front of the kids and the girls leapt to the sides. Rowan didn't. He punched the beasts stomach and lose bits of it flew off. It came crashing down and the boy only got away thanks to his boots.

The beast stomped around like a wild horse, running between the kids and missing with each slap to the ground with its big monkey arms.

"Them birds." Tom said.
There were two, unlike any she'd seen. Bright red. Big topknots. An adult and a chick.
"TOM!" Ire screamed and dragged her away.
Ire saw the birds as well, dragging something from under a bush.

The beast swung down and everyone jumped out the way.
"Alright." Rowan psyched himself up.
He held up a guard and ran for the beast, landing a punch across its face. Its wet hairy face and now Rowans hand was wet which took priority. He was too busy whipping his hand to see the beast slap him off his feet and across the field.
It spun its head to the girls and Wolf held a guard up.
She ran up to it and let anger push her fist through the beast, it felt like soggy cardboard, and broke like it too. But it kicked Wolf down the hill and past Rowan who boosted onto the beasts back and locked an arms around its neck.
Ire and Tom stayed frozen on the grass.
The birds pecked at a shield beneath the bush. Ire ran over, grabbed it and leapt over Tom.
The beast pounded down on the shield which stood strong, Ire kept Tom and herself safe beneath it.

Rowan pulled tighter then he could and the beast rose high to let out a squeal.
It came crashing down unconscious and flung Rowan to the floor.
"Ugh, disgusting it's like seaweed!" He laughed.
He found it harder to breath with a full breath hurting his scar but he ignored it.

Ire lowered her shield to see and Tom popped her head out as well.
Rowan helped Wolf up, getting the slobber on her hands.
"Gross." Tom teased.
"I know! It's seaweed or something." Rowan told.
"I wasn't talking about the beast."
"Tom." Ire got her to look at the bird.

It had been crushed, twitching but not getting up. The smaller bird came out from under its wing and they realised the big bird wasn't moving.
It mourned its mother as the kids just watched.
"This is yo-" Ire held up the shield but the bird flew away.
