Saturday after their dance lesson, Tom and Ire met with Wolf and Rowan and went to Rhosneigr to meet Leon. (It's between Spring Valley and Abyfrown).
The five met at the chippy and Rowan introduced them."You were good in the play." Ire said.
"You watched it?" Leon asked a little embarrassed.
"My brother's in it. Ryan, The Beast."
"No way, Maisie, thought I recognised you."
"You met?" Rowan asked.
"Yea went to Ryans a few times. How's he doin'?"
"Stressing. Got GCSEs now so."
"Gutted." Leon laughed.
"So who were you?" Tom asked.
"In the play." Ire clarified.
"Oh, Gaston. Does Ire mean anything? Ire Hardy?"
Then they explained The Mash. The five got chips and walked for a bit.
"Yea and Sayle stole that manikin the legend." Leon said.
"Yea..."
"We was gonna steal Horseteeths blinds too but it never got to that." (Horseteeth was a teacher).
"Wait really!?" Ire laughed.
"God I hate her." Wolf moaned.
"She's the one that told me the typewriter thing." Rowan said, "None of you heard of it? Ok so, obviously it's not true, but I never thought about it after I heard it so I never had to think if it was true or not."
"What was it?" Ire asked.
"So, it's why the Welsh alphabet has less letters. Because when they sailed to Walse their typewriter had missing letters like 'k' and 'z'."
To which everyone laughed.
"Why- what!?" Leon laughed.
"That's so stupid!" Wolf added.
"Well I know now." He laughed at himself, "Because I thought about it for like, one second!"
"Hey Leon Rowan said you seen ghosts." Tom brought up.
"Yea, doing the show."
"Were they big? Because there's a ghost here, wanna see it? She's called Madam Wen."They agreed so all sat on a dune and watched a bridge Madam Wen would walk.
"I wouldn't mind being in a band again." Leon said.
"Same. We don't have to play anywhere, just hang out and practice." Rowan told.
"Where though?" They asked.
"We'll meet here." Tom said.
"Play on the beach?"
"No, at mine. My Taid won't mind he's awesome."Her bridge being close to the caravan sight made Wolf think they wouldn't see a ghost, which is why she said 'fock off' when it appeared.
The five kids watched intently. It pushed a wheelbarrow of smashed plasterboard. How odd.
Tom couldn't help getting up and shaking Ire.
"Dude!" Ire whispered but it was too late, Madam Wen saw.
"Fuck." Rowan jumped in front, "Let's go!"
Ire took her shield up and Tom got ready to fight.
"I meant run!" Rowan yelled, "It's a ghost."
Madam Wen threw plasterboard bits at the kids so Tom threw rocks back, laughing as she did.
"Ha!" Leon laughed, "You're crazy, I like you."
They joined in throwing rocks but Ire leapt in front of Tom and held the shield up.
"Guys c'mon!" Wolf insisted.
"Oh fine." Tom sighed.
So they ran away over the dunes on the quiet night.
"MADAM WEN!" Tom shouted across the hills.
"MADAM WEN!" Leon joined. It was late now so Leon said goodbye and the rest went to Toms. Rowan stayed over because it was easier then getting the train home.
"He seems fun." Ire said.
"Oh he's-" Rowan stopped himself, "they're they. I can't even get it right and I know. They said they're non binary."
"Oh yea? Good for them." Ire said.Tom went through to her Taid in the front room. He was old and frail and watching a cowboy film.
"Lois." He smiled sweetly.
"Hey. Uh, we're back... we're gonna go to sleep now."
"You have friends over? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I did. We're gonna go... so.""I thought you said he was cool with us?" Rowan asked.
"He's like that, he's just joking!" Tom brushed off and led the way to her room. They stayed up scaring each other and eating penguins from Toms secret stash until they got too comfy.
Tom and Ire were head to tails in the bed, Wolf had a spare mattress and Rowan had the sofas pillows.——————————⊣ ⋮ ⊢——————————
Tom would always wake up midway through the night. The girls would always have sleepovers and it wouldn't matter because Ire and Wolf were heavy sleepers, but Rowan wasn't.
"Sorry..." She sighed.
"No it wasn't you... are you okay?"
She sat with her head out the window so Rowan joined her, watching the nothing outside.
"Do you like this?" She asked.
There was no wind, no birds or trains, but she watched.
"It's nice." Rowan said, "It's like we're nowhere."
"Right!?" Tom smiled, "I feel that sometimes. That's where you went ye? Wolf said so."
Rowan just sighed, he watched the nothing, and Tom did the same.
"...y'know... sometimes I think my brain goes too fast." She traced the edge of the windowsill, "Like there's too much going on and I can't have one thing. Like it keeps duplicating, adding more and more and I can't stop it... but, when I'm here, it's like I can."
"I think that's what's past the sky."
She rested her head on her arms, "...that's why you're trying to go!"
"Yea."
"I wouldn't mind that." She smiled.
They looked to the sky, not sure what it was.
"If the sky's fake, where does rain come from?" She asked, "Or snow- or lightning?"
Rowan took a moment before smiling, it seemed obvious now but he'd never thought about it before.
"Because there was this folk tale about giants who could catch lightning." She told, "The dad had this big anchor and it's the one on the beach. We did it in primary, oh! And the mum is Spring Valley. The mountain. Don't you see it?" She asked, tracing the outline of the mountain, "Her hair goes up to her head, then that's her neck, and..." she went over the next bump.
"Boobs?" Rowan said.
"Um... yea, then her legs bend." She got to the other end of the mountain.
"That's cool. Pretty big giant." Rowan smiled, "How'd she get buried?"
"I don't know... I never thought about it." She sighed and got up, "I should sleep, Jude gets angry when I don't."
So the two went back to sleep. The nothing was ruined by them being.
