As Jay excitedly moved around the kitchen rambling about the new dish he wanted to try and make for me, my eyes followed him. I was quietly sitting by the kitchen counter, leaning my elbows on the counter as I did.
"And if I add a bit more of spice it'll be perfect, don't you think?" Jay turned to me with a wide grin on his face, the stitches above his eyebrow still hadn't been moved but his handsome features had stayed untouched.
"Of course," I nodded at him with a small smile, "you're the best cook there is, remember?"
"Oh yeah... I am!" he realized as a small laugh escaped him.
All at once he turned back to the pan in front of him, showing his back to you, a small bandaid peeking up above the collar of his shirt, covering a part of his neck.
It had been barely a month since he and his girlfriend was involved in that car crash, together for two years and three months to be exact. At least that's what he has told me by now. That car crash was the exact reason for him to have those stitches above his eyebrow, the bandaid in his back, and the tendency to forget how good he is at cooking. The reason why he believes that I am his girlfriend.
Never once in my career as a freelance actor did I think nor imagine that I would be hired for a job that didn't have a definite end date. The role of Jay's late-girlfriend is one I have to play until he decides to break up with her one day, until then I have to act as if I'm his girlfriend and ensure that he is happy, that's what I'm getting paid for by his parents, and that's what I'm gonna do even though I find it extremely unbelieveably unethical.
There was no doubt that I was against the beliefs of his parents in this case, it felt so wrong and for once I felt like my job forced me to lie, before it had just been me taking on a persona for a fictive character but this was just betrayal. Jay thought he had something he didn't have and I was pretending to be a dead girl in order for him to stay happy.
"Honey?" Jay's voice brought me back to reality, shaking my head slightly as I looked over at him and smiled, "are you alright? I've been calling you for at least a minute," he spoke, concern evident in his eyes. It was only that look of genuine feeling that made me feel even worse about doing this job.
"Yeah, yeah. It's just your cooking that smells so good that I'm brought into a trance by it," I cheesily replied and a small smile spread on his face before he walked over and began dividing the food up into two equally as big portions.
"Just wait until you taste it, you'll be brought even more into a trance then," he assured, "and afterwards we're gonna watch a movie and cuddle."
"Again?" I let out a small laugh at the idea of doing the same as we've done for the past two nights.
"Remember what my doctor's said? No physical activity, just rest, and you'll help me with that," he reminded with a small cheeky smile at you as he placed the pan in the sink and let water run down over it.
"Seeing you in a kitchen is anything but rest," I reminded him, "you rush around too much."
"But my mind is at peace," he reminded and grabbed both plates, setting his route straight for the dining table.
A small smile rested on my face as I folded my hands under my chin, not following him with my eyes for once. He walked right up beside me as a stop on his route, pressing a soft kiss to my cheek, a part of his cooking routine by now. My smile getting more soft at the feeling of the kiss against my cheek.
"I know you're not really her, but I appreciate you staying here," Jay quietly whispered, my smile immediately faltering as he walked away and I stiffened up, "come eat Honey," he called out and I turned around to watch as he placed both plates on the dining table, glancing up to send me a knowing smile, "just continue your job, I don't mind."
"I'm sorry," I whispered as got up and rushed over to sit at the dining table.
"Nonsense," he shook his head as he sat down by the table to eat as well, "things were going downhill anyways. You've loved me better in the last month than she did in two years. Now eat up."
I glanced up at Jay as he just smiled in encouragement for me to continue eating. I couldn't help but wonder when he had noticed or remembered that I wasn't his girlfriend, but the way he assured me it was alright did make me feel a bit better, even though something in me still screamed about how terribly wrong it was.
