Come Back To Me

He promised himself he wouldn't drink again but he failed at it. Being back in District 12 was tough, seeing how destroyed everything was around here, not seeing a lot of people here as most did not want to stay here, knowing what happened. But he came back. He followed Katniss and Peeta all the way back here. He watched how they started their little family. How they slowly learned to be happy again and find peace in this broken world.

But he did not find it... Instead he grabbed the bottle of liquor he hid away in his closet and drank to forget. He drank to forget everyone he lost. He drank to forget all the shit that happened. He drank to not be reminded the whole fucking time that happiness was not something for him. He tried. He bought some geese and he actually liked them. But they did not talk to him and sometimes they were rude and would bite his shin. Sometimes he thought he would just kill them and eat them but he couldn't... Because they were the only ones who were with him everyday.

"Haymitch, I told you yesterday that she is okay."Plutarch spoke when he answered the phone already knowing who was on the otherside. "I don't need to know if she is okay."Haymitch said, taking a gulp from the bottle. "I need to know if...if she is happy."He added softly, his heart breaking slowly at the thought that she was possibly happy back there. Happy without him... "You know you could call her and ask her yourself?"Plutarch suggested to only hear a grunt. "Don't be stupid."Haymitch hissed irritated. "Is she happy?"He repeated himself, leaning against the wall. "I don't know, Haymitch."Plutarch answered with a sigh. "She is managing, that is all I can say."He said before ending the call as Haymitch stared at the phone in his hand before dropping it, not caring to put it right back where it belonged. It meant no one could bother him if he left it like that. And he would like it, that no one would bug him today and even tomorrow. Maybe he didn't want to hear anyone for the rest of his life?

He didn't need anyone really! He had everything right here. He had his geese and Peeta and Katniss and their little troublemaker. He was quite happy how it was. Why did he even bother to hear how she was doing? She never called him, she never reached out to him. Maybe she was happy. Maybe he should be glad she was happy. Maybe she found someone who could love her like she was supposed to be loved. Someone who would hold her when she had a nightmare. Who would rub her back and whisper sweet words that would help her fall back asleep. Someone who would make her a cup of coffee in the morning and remind her how beautiful she is. Someone who will tell her that she is the only one for them. That she is their world...

"Haymitch?"Katniss asked as she knocked on the frontdoor. He was pretty sure Peeta had send her here and they would try to make him come have dinner with them to make him feel less lonely. "I'm not here!"He answered, putting the bottle down as he looked around. His house was a mess... It was an absolute mess. "Open the door, Haymitch!"Katniss yelled irritated, hitting the door harder. "Or I'll break it."She warned as the old victor just groaned at that before marching towards it, throwing it open. "What is it?"He asked with a raised eyebrow as Katniss quickly scanned him. "You look like shit."She said plainly as he laughed at that. "What an observation."He said sarcastically. "Peeta wants me to invite you over for dinner."She said, ignoring what he had just said as she peeked inside, shaking her head when she noticed how a mess it was in there. "Can you even have a peaceful dinner in there?"She asked skeptical. "I can have a perfectly fine dinner in there."He said back, closing the door a bit more to block the view. "Yeah? I wouldn't be surprised if rats stole your food right from under your nose."She threw back as he rolled his eyes at that comment. "You're not really making me want to come over for dinner."He stated with crossed arms. "Get yourself together. We expect you at 6, don't be late."She said before marching away, right back inside her house probably to complain to Peeta about him as he threw the door shut harshly. He realized they were trying to help him, that they were trying to pull him through. But he did not need anyone to look out for him. He was doing absolutely fine!

"Children."He muttered irritated as he went outside to feed his geese who seemed to be in a rather good mood as they did not try to bite him. No, they were just eating and minding their own bussiness just how he liked it. Why couldn't they be like that all the time?

"I see you came."Katniss stated when she opened her frontdoor, looking Haymitch up and down to make sure he looked alright before letting him enter. "It's not like you gave me a choice, darling."Haymitch threw back to only get attacked by a child who happily threw her arms around him. "HAYMIE!"She yelled loudly, smiling at him as he couldn't help but to smile back, ruffling her hair. "There is my little troublemaker."He said, picking her up as he carried her back to the kitchen where Peeta probably was, making their dinner but he wasn't...

No, it was not Peeta behind the counter, chopping some vegetables...

"Haymitch."Her soft but fragile voice said as he put Prim down carefully, his eyes not leaving her as Katniss quickly guided the little girl away, to give them some privacy. "I didn't know you were here, princess."He said in a whisper almost wanting to throw something at her, to make sure she was real and not something he imagined. "I tried to call you but I couldn't get through."She explained as Haymitch groaned, remembering how he had not bothered to put the phone back on its place. "What are you doing here?"He asked, watching how her hands trembled as put the knife down. "I had to see how you were, Haymitch."She explained carefully, her blue eyes seemed to be avoiding him. "And are you quite satisfied with how I am now?"He asked, gesturing at himself which finally managed to make her look at him. "You look like..."She started, thinking about what to say. "Shit?"He asked, finishing it before she could as he closed the distance between them, leaning against the counter next to her. "Yes."She simply said with a nod before focusing her attention back on the tomato she was chopping before he had arrived but suddenly it seemed so hard as her hands were still trembling. "Be careful, princess. I don't want you to hurt yourself."He said softly, stopping her from taking the knife again. "Why didn't you call me, Haymitch?"She asked in a whisper. If she could not focus her attention on what she was doing than she could better focus her attention on what she really wanted to know.

"I didn't want you to remind you of everything."He stated with a shrug. "All the shit you went through."He added. "You know Plutarch always told me when you called and asked how I was doing."She explained and he couldn't help but to curse that man under his breath. Of course, he had to tell her it. Couldn't he peacefully ask questions? "I wanted you to call me."She added. "But you never called me, sweetheart."He threw back to hear how a sigh slipped past her lips. "You know you just had to ask me."She stated, her hand finding his as he looked up at that, finding her eyes. "What should I have asked?"He asked carefully. "Ask me to come back to you, Abernathy."She answered with a small smile. "Because I would have been here much sooner than."He couldn't stop the smile that formed on his lips as he pulled her closer towards him, wrapping his arms around her. "Are you coming back to me, princess?"He asked, resting his chin on her head, inhaling her scent. "I am and I am planning to hold on tight to you."She answered, reaching up to place a kiss on his lips. "If you let me."She added.

"I have never let you go, sweetheart."
