"What did you get on your O.W.L.S.?" Lance asked as he and Ed walked to Defense Against the Dark Arts.
"Well... I got all O's, except for an E in Transfiguration," she replied.
"ALMOST ALL O'S!" Lance's jaw dropped open.
"You must've done just as good."
"Pft, no. I got an O in Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms, an A in Potions and Divination, and the rest E's."
"That's still really good," Ed commented.
"Did you drop Care of Magical Creatures this year?" She asked.
"Hell yeah, I knew I was going to the second Hagrid brought out those blast ended skrewts."
"Me too," Ed laughed.
"It was much easier than Ancient Runes this year, though. I already have a 15 inch essay, two translations, and readings due by next week."
"Why did you do that to yourself?"
"I honestly don't know, it's really interesting though."
"I can't believe Snape's finally Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher," Lance said as they walked into the classroom.
"I know, he's been wanting that position forever."
"At least we know he'll be better than the other teachers," he stated as they sat down in desks next to each other.
Snape soon walked in and they ended their conversation.
"I have not asked you to take out your books," the professor said sternly.
Ed heard a book drop, and when she turned her head she saw that it was Hermione.
"I wish to speak to you, and I want your fullest attention," Snape demanded.
"You have had five teachers in this subject so far, I believe."
"Given this confusion I am surprised so many of you scraped an O.W.L. in this subject. I shall be even more surprised if all of you mange to keep up with the N.E.W.T. work, which will be much more advanced."
"Now, you are, I believe, complete novices in the use of nonverbal spells. What is the advantage of a nonverbal spell?"
"Very well, Miss Granger?" He called on Hermione, who had her hand raised high.
"Your adversary has no warning about what kind of magic you're about to perform, which gives you a split-second advantage," she answered.
"An answer copied almost word for word from The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 6," Snape said disapprovingly.
Malfoy sniggered from the corner.
"... but correct in essentials. You will now divide into pairs. One partner will attempt to jinx the other without speaking. The other will attempt to repel the jinx in equal silence. Carry on," Snape instructed.
Ed immediately turned to where Malorie usually sat next to her, only to find the seat empty.
"Hey, Lance, do you want to be partners?" She asked.
"Sorry, Ed, but I'm with Nott already."
"Oh."
"I think Zabini needs a partner though," he suggested.
Ed went over to ask him, but was stopped by someone else.
"Actually, Ed, we can be partners," Nott suggested at the last second.
