"Serin!" My brother jumped up from the sofa once I came in from the front door. "I missed you!" He practically whimpered as he threw his arms around me and I threw mine around his shoulders.
"Wow, Tae, since when were you so nice?" I chuckled and pulled away to look at him. He had grown a little taller from the last time I've seen him. "Whatever." He rolled his eyes and went back to playing video games. "Dad's in the kitchen, by the way." He cocked his head to the direction of the kitchen.
I nodded my head and dropped my duffel bag onto the wooden floor. "Have you been good to dad?" I ruffled Taehyung's hair as I walked past him to get to the kitchen. Grumbles along with annoyed hissing came from him saying that he had just fixed his hair.
"Dad, I'm home!" I announced once I set foot into the aroma-filled kitchen. His back was facing me as he did some cooking on the stove. He practically dropped the wooden spoon into the pot when I spoke. "Serin?" He spun around with the hugest smile on his face. "You're home!" Dad ran around the middle isle and quickly pulled me in to a tight hug.
It's been probably a year since I came back here in Daegu. Ever since a year ago, I didn't like coming back here. Not that I didn't want to see my family, heck I missed them like hell. But rather, I didn't want to feel the pain. It hurt to come back here and pretend like everything is okay when clearly everything wasn't.
"Have you eaten?" Dad asked as he went back to cooking. I shook my head and sat down on one of the tall chairs of the counter.
Mom had always insisted that she didn't want a dining table but instead, she wanted those long-legged stools and a tall counter where we could have our dinner. She always wanted to be different from other families and she did a great job on doing so.
"No, well, I didn't on purpose because I missed your cooking." Dad hummed at my response as he transferred the food onto a bowl. He clicked his tongue as a smile graced his face. "You're just on time." He placed the bowl down in front of me and called for Taehyung.
The delicious aroma filled the air and I couldn't wait to dig in and stuff my face with dad's home-cooked meal. I barely had time to cook for myself so instead I always had takeout for dinner and just a sandwich for breakfast.
"Taehyung-ah, you should learn how to cook like dad." I laughed as he took a seat next to me. "Please," Dad rolled his eyes while he helped himself with his own serving of the food that he had cooked himself. "He might just burn down the kitchen."
Taehyung let out a small whine before he did the same and started eating. "Don't worry, I can teach you how to cook someday." I chuckled and gave him a firm pat on the shoulder.
He gave me a thumbs-up and showed off that charming rectangular smile that he was famous for. "I'll wait for that time to come!" He enthusiastically pumped his hand in the air with his spoon wedged in between his fingers.
We continued feasting on the delicious meal that our dad prepared. I felt like my tastebuds were about to faint from the bursting flavours that felt like they were devouring my mouth.
Moments later, our chattering gradually came to a halt as we savoured the taste of what we were eating.
"I miss mom," Dad dropped his spoon with a loud clank onto the ceramic plate. I held my breath as the pain struck through me again. "I thought we agreed to not talk about that subject?" I watched the tightness of dad's jaw as his eyes practically bore holes onto Taehyung.
Taehyung hung his head low as he stared down onto his lap. The both of us didn't dare mutter anything as we listened to our father. "I'm going to tell you-Both of you, one last time. We will not speak of her ever again." And then he was gone.
I watched the soft steam from his abandoned dinner plate slowly rise up into the air. "I'm sorry," His voice was soft and scared and it broke my heart. "I didn't mean to but I just-I miss her, Serin." He pushed his plate back and dug his face into his wounded arms.
His shoulders were bobbing up and down and I knew he was crying. The amount of sadness that this boy keeps inside himself, despite the bright rectangular smile I always see, saddens me. It was heartbreaking to know that he's trying so hard. But everyone has the right to cry, everyone has the right to be weak sometimes.
"Come here," I pulled him up from the table and wrapped my arms around his shaking body. "I miss her too." I whispered as I gently rubbed his back. Crying sometimes makes it all a little bit okay.
His tears were warm against my skin which was cold from the crisp air that I walked with this morning. "Let it out." I coaxed him. He clung onto me like how he did when he was six years old when he was scolded for playing in the dirt.
--
"I'll come visit soon, alright? Don't worry, Taehyungie." Just like during dinner yesterday, he had his head hung low with a slight frown. Even though he's seventeen, he sometimes still acts like a four year old. "You should come home more often."
I sighed in disappointment. "I know, it's just that I'm very busy but I try every time I get the chance." Dad has gone to work early in the morning and since it was a weekend, Taehyung had to stay here at home alone.
"Okay." He murmured and gave me another hug. "Do well in school. When I come back, maybe two weeks from now, you better maintain your class rank." He chuckled and gave me a thumbs-up.
Evening came and I stepped out of the bus with my duffel bag on the edge of my shoulder. The lazy looking sign hung from the iron bar at the sidewall. Rust grimed the soft twists and turns of the metal. 'White Bean' It said in ironically black letters, carefully inscribed calligraphy.
I found myself unconsciously pushing the glass door which seemed to get heavier with ever visit I pay. Soft ringing of the chimes blew their way into my ears as that serene feeling, once again, settled inside of me.
"Good evening!" The guy that I'm still guessing is Chanwoo. "Your pretty boy Yoongi isn't here if you were going to ask." I chuckled at his accurate guess and approached the counter.
My eyes did a quick scan around the odd shaped room as if I didn't believe what he had just told me. "What makes you think I was looking for him?" I asked him even though I knew that he was, in fact, correct.
"What other reason would there be for you to come here?" He chuckled and wiped the top of the counter with a worn out rag.
I stayed silent for a moment, just watching him clean up the old shop. "He hasn't been here for two days, actually." He looked up at me fora brief moment then continued wiping the crumbs off of the other tables of the café.
"Yesterday, he called in sick but he didn't say anything today." A wave of worry passed through me though I knew I shouldn't have even felt that.
"Is that so? He's probably still sick." I turned to walk back to the well known weighty door. "I'll be going now."
