Chapter 13. Lost and Alone

The next day, Peter asked Cole to hike with him. Cole was so excited that Peter was interested in spending time with him. They brought an ax and some small supplies for a couple of hours of hiking. But, Peter forgot to check on the weather that day, and that was the worst decision that he ever made all his life.
They went out around 7am, Alex and his other kids still asleep. Peter left a note on the kitchen counter. Cole carried the water and snacks while Peter carried the ax and wood carrier. They head up north and find some wood logs that they can use. But when they want to head back, suddenly the rain is pouring. They found a cave about half mile off the hike track, so they took cover inside the cave.
Alex and the rest of the kids started to get a little worried when Cole and Peter did not come home as the rain started, but Alex does not want to go out with the two kids to find Cole and Peter. Especially because of the rain. Alex just hopes that Peter and Cole will be just fine.
Lucky for Peter and Cole, Peter brought a fire starter and some lighters. Peter started a fire while waiting for the rain to stop. Cole is shivering, mostly because he is scared. So, Peter held him tightly. Peter tried to calm Cole down. They are pretty warm and protected, but the problem is it they can’t just go back right after the rain stops because the trail will be slippery.
“Cole, are you okay?” Peter asked, stupid question, but he had to make sure.
“I’m not.. I am scared, Peter..” Cole was trying to hold back his tears.
“I am here with you, son..” Peter rubbed Cole’s head.
“I think my dad hates me..” Cole started to cry.
“How can you say that your dad hates you?” Peter asked. He thinks that Alex loves Cole so much. He has no idea why Cole would say that.
“My dad loves your kids, because they are his..” Cole said.
“Oh?” Peter held his breath. It’s very possible that Alex is Russ’ and Bea’s father, considering they both are not his.
“Why did you just say ‘oh’? Aren’t you shocked that they are my dad’s?” Cole asked.
“I don’t really care who their father is. If it happened to be Alex, then so be it. But I am their father, legally, and I am their father that is there for them every single day. It doesn’t matter, Cole. And you are my son, although we are not blood related nor legally mine. Because, being there as a father counts the most.” Peter stared at Cole and smiled.
“My dad tested Russ’ and Bea’s DNA a couple weeks ago. He told me they were his kids.” Cole looked down. “What if my dad doesn’t want me anymore?” Cole’s face looks upset.
“Then I will adopt you. I will be your father, Cole. I promised you that..” Peter held Cole tightly.
The rain stopped after a few hours. But as Peter predicted, the hike down is slippery. At one of the turns, Peter slipped and fell a few feet down. He was sure that he either twisted something or broke something. Cole was crying while Peter was screaming in pain. Peter finally calmed Cole down and asked him to get someone.
Peter could only hold his pain just until Cole disappeared to go and tell Alex about him. Then Peter cried, because his life had turned to a shambles that day. He just found out that Emma had cheated on him with Alex, and Alex or Emma had never told him that before. He felt betrayed, and somehow that betrayal feels so much worse than his actual physical pain.
To think that he is dating the man that is actually his kids' father for years just wounded him. And the fact that Alex still had not been honest with him, hurts him. Why didn’t Alex tell him about the affair? He thought he knew who Alex and Emma were for the longest time. But, at the end of the time. He is the one that is always stuck alone and lonely as he is stuck on his two best friends web of lies.
The real question is, does he want to forgive these people? And pretend that nothing happened or that he wants to just leave this heart-breaking past and just move on. Because it seemed like no matter how many times he forgives Alex and Emma, they seemed to keep giving Peter a heart break. He knows he deserves someone better than these two.
He should never have come back; he should have stayed with Sean. Maybe if he did that he would be a happy man now, but he did not choose that, and now he ended up lost and alone. Is it really worth it, to give all his best to these kids that are not his? He is a rich 31 years old man; he can get anyone he wants. So why does he keep revolving himself around Alex’s lies? Alex is a perfect sub, but that is not enough to pay off his dirty lies that he told Peter.

Peter ended up in hospital a few hours later. The doctor said that he broke his leg and Peter couldn’t walk for the next couple of months. Peter has not confronted Alex about the fact that he slept with Emma. Alex did not stay long in the hospital because they have 3 kids that need to be taken care of. But Alex had arranged that he would drive back with the kids tomorrow and hopefully they could ask Peter’s parents to watch the kids while Alex waited for Peter to be released from hospital and fly back with him.
Peter’s parents eventually agree to take the kids for a week until Peter is released from the hospital. So, Alex came back two days later alone. The doctor actually said that he would release Peter the next day because he already had his cast and no complications so far. So, that night Alex spend a night in the hospital with Peter.
Peter finally gathered up his courage and asked Alex. “So, Emma was cheating on me with you..” That was not the question he wanted to ask, but one that just slipped out of his mouth.
“What?” Alex turned his face from his phone to Peter's.
“Cole told me. It was you..” Peter sighed. “Just stop playing dumb, Alex. I know you are not dumb.”
“Oh, that.. I lied to Cole.” Alex's eyes returned to his phone.
“What? Why?” Peter asked. He was really confused, why did Alex lie to Cole.
“He found the DNA test when he was looking for your check book.” Alex answered, it was a short answer because he was texting Chloe about how upset was Cole with her.
“Why does he look for my checkbook? And why did you lie? Come on, stop lying to me! You promised!” Peter yelled now.
Alex put down his phone, finally. He took a deep breath and walked to Peter. “I lied because Cole was feeling alone. And when he asked about the test, I just lied. I never touched Emma after we broke up until your heart procedures.” Alex sighed. “And I asked him to grab you check book because Emma said your spousal support did not come in last month.”
“What? I sent her the check!” Peter protested. “Are you telling the truth? You lied so many times I just don’t know if I should trust you anymore.”
“I deserve that, but think about the kids. I love them.” Alex sighed. “Just straighten it up with Emma, please? I really don’t want to be in between you two again.” Alex kissed Peter’s cheek. “Look, I gave Cole fake DNA testing because I figured if there is a bad guy in breaking your marriage, it should be me.”
“I still don’t know why you did that. Tell me the truth, please? You owe me the truth.” Peter sighed.
Alex pulled out his phone and showed Peter the real DNA test from the laboratory. “I don’t know, Pete. I am telling you the truth.”
Peter pulled out his phone; he called Emma. Emma picked it up. “Alex said that you asked him for the last month's alimony?” Peter started with an easier question.
“Yeah, because you did not send me one!” Emma said with anger.
“I did and you cashed it. Why do you lie?” Peter asked.
“I didn’t!” Emma insisted.
“Okay, fine..” Peter sighed. It doesn’t matter anyway; it is only two thousand dollars. “Who is Russ' and Bea’s father?” Peter asked at last.
“You? Why are you asking this? What did Alex tell you? You trust him blindly every single time!” Emma yelled at Peter now.
“No, I tested the kids. They are not mine..” Peter sighed. It was  total silence on the other end, then Peter heard a car horn so loud and some screeching. “EMMA!!” The phone disconnected.
“What happened?” Alex stared at Peter.
“I think Emma was in a car accident..” Peter’s phone dropped from his hand. He does not know what happened to Emma.
