Friday, December 17th
He looks up at me as I arrive, and the look on his face makes me freeze.
My heart drops.
I slowly walk up to him, pain enveloping his face.
He doesn't move.
"Hey," I say softly as I reach him. I stop in front of him.
He looks back down, refusing to meet my gaze.
"Let's go." He says. His voice is nonchalant as he starts making his way down the stairs to the platform.
I quickly follow behind him. "Wait, what are you doing? Where are we going?"
He doesn't respond and continues walking down the stairs, reaching the bottom.
I attempt to grab his arm, but he pulls it away in an instant. His voice makes me shiver slightly.
"I just need to talk to you."
I stare at him in confusion. "Wh- talk to me here then, George. Why did you leave?"
He doesn't look at me, and I start to see the subway come into sight.
"George?" I try again quietly. He doesn't respond.
I feel my heart start to ache.
What did I do?
The subway comes to a stop in front of us, and he steps inside. I follow him.
"You gotta talk to me, George. What happened?"
I watch as he lightly wipes one of his eyes, and feel my throat start to close up.
What happened?
---
We'd stood in the subway silently for minutes, until he finally gets off.
I quickly follow him as he starts walking back upstairs to the cool outside air.
He continues walking, not even trying to wait up for me.
I attempt to keep up with him as my thoughts run.
Why does he look so hurt?
Did something happen to him?
Is his sister alright?
We pass many buildings, the fairy lights now contrasting the atmosphere between him and I.
We continue walking, George finally stopping in front of a dark green door, barely visible in the lighting.
He opens it easily, and I follow behind him.
It's a dark room, barely any lighting, but he starts to ascend the stairs in an instant as his eyes fixate upon them.
After a few minutes of walking in almost complete darkness, bright light starts to appear on the top of the stairs.
The light becomes brighter and clearer, until we eventually reach the top.
The fresh breeze hits my face immediately, and I follow him to the ledge.
My eyes widen in astonishment as I look over.
The lights are beautifully luminous, covering the entirety of the city.
Some of the lights even reaching the water behind, reflecting off and creating a beautiful scene.
There could be hundreds of people down there, thousands even; all in their own little worlds.
