Chapter 10; Stars

Rick's P.O.V.

Shane, Daryl, and I took the kid out to the barn to execute him. Shane put a blind fold on him and kicked him in the back of the knees, causing him to kneel.

I loaded my gun and asked, "Any last words?"

"No, please man. I'm too young to die. I don't wanna die, man. Please." The kid begged.

I put my gun to his head. I was about to pull the trigger but I heard a small voice at the front of the barn.

"Do it, dad." Carl said.

We all turn towards him. Shane walks over and grabbed Carl's arm and yanked him away. I sighed and told Daryl to put the kid back in the shed.

I put my gun back in it's holster and walked over to the house. I stormed onto the porch and saw Lucy standing there.

"What's wrong?" She asked.

I sighed and stood next to her, "I was about to shoot the kid and Carl came into the barn. Why is Lori never watching him?" I joke slightly.

She gave a small laugh, "I was wondering the same thing."

I chuckled. We stood in silence for a few minutes, just looking out into the dark farm. I broke the silence by mumbling, "It actually feels....peaceful."

She smiled and leaned her head back to soak up the night's air. The moonlight shine dully down on her face and spilled over down on her neck. My eyes trailed down her face and over her neck.

"Hey," she said. "follow me if you want peaceful."

I followed her towards the barn and up its ladder.

"Where are we going?" I asked as we begin to climb another set of ladders.

"You'll see." She answered as we climb on top of the barn's roof. She laid down on her back and looked up at the stars. I sat down next to her and hugged one of my knees close to me.

"See?" She said. "Me and my sisters use to come up here all the time to see the stars. Sometimes, we'd come up to see the sunrise too, minus Maggie. She doesn't like to get up early." She laughed as she crossed her ankles and put her hands on her stomach.

I laid down next to her. She rambled on about how Beth thinks that constellation looks like a flower or something. She was pointing at the stars but I wasn't looking at the stars. I was looking at something far more pretty.

She turned to look at me with her beautiful blue eyes and her button nose. Her perfectly arched eyebrows and rose-red lips. She was beautiful. More beautiful than Lori.

"Lucy-" I began but was cut off by a blood curdling scream.

We both jump up and run to the ladder. We run from the barn towards the scream. Some of the others meet with us and we run towards the field. I saw a walker on top of Dale, tearing his insides out. Charlie jumped on the walker and tackled him down. Lucy stabbed it in the head with her machete. Andrea was bent over Dale, balling. Lori held Carl close to her.

"Come on," I said. "We gotta move him."

Lucy shook her head, "No, Rick. He'll never survive the move."

I paced, trying to reason this out. Everyone was talking or crying at the same time. Everyone but Daryl.

Andrea snapped her head up towards Lucy, "Someone do something! You, your a nurse. Help him. Do something!"

Lucy shook her head and stood up. "I can't. The most humane thing we could do, is put him down." She said quietly.

I sighed and took my Python out of it's holster. I loaded it and held it to Dale's head. I tried to pull the trigger but he was staring at me with pain filled eyes.

I felt someone lower my arm. I turned to see Lucy reaching for my handgun. She took it and held it to Dale's head. She pulled the trigger and a single bang ended Dale's life.
