14. My First Expedition Begins

Just then the gates opened and everyone rode out. I know I'm supposed to be focused on this mission, but I can't help but wonder what Eren was hiding behind his back. I decided to ask him about it. "Hey Eren."

"Yea?" he replied.

"What was that thing you were hiding behind your back earlier?"

"It's nothing."

"Are you sure?"

"Yea, don't worry about it Y/n. You'll find out soon enough." Eren then turned away from me and said, "That is if you don't die today."

"I can assure you I won't be dying."

"You better not," Eren said, looking at me again.

"I won't," I replied. "Same goes for you."

Eren laughed a little before saying, "If I die I'm gonna haunt you for the rest of your life."

"To be honest, I'd rather be haunted by your ghost than not having you around at all."

"Hey," Eld said. "Can you guys please just focus on the mission?"

"Oh, sorry," I replied.

We've been riding for about half an hour when a soldier came up to us to inform us about something. "What is it?" Captain Levi asked.

"Sir, the right wing has been completely wiped out!" the soldier said.

"... But how?" I asked.

"They say a bunch of abnormal titans came running their way and completely wiped them all out!"

"Were there any survivors?" Captain Levi asked.

The soldier was silent for a moment. "N-No sir."

"Well Captain, what's the plan now?" Oruo asked. "There's a forest coming up ahead."

I looked forward and saw a forest of huge trees.

"You," Captain Levi said to the soldier. "Go to Erwin and ask him what the plan is now."

"Sir!" the soldier replied, riding off.

About another half an hour passed when the soldier came riding back.

"So?" Captain Levi said. "What did he say?"

"He said your squad is to go into the forest, while all the other squads ride around the forest."

"Wait what?" Eren said. "Why are we the only squad going into the forest?"

Captain Levi muttered something that I couldn't make out.

"Captain...?" Petra asked.

"Just go along with Erwin's plan." Captain Levi replied.

What's going on? Does he know something we don't?

Suddenly Eren snapped me out of my thoughts. "Y/n?"

"Yes?" I replied.

"Are you ok?" Eren asked.

"I'm fine."

"Are you sure? Because you look like-"

"Eren," I said, interrupting him. "I'm just... confused right now."

"Well, you're not the only one."

"The forest is just up ahead." Petra said.

"Right," Captain Levi replied. "Let's head in."

As we rode deeper and deeper into the forest, I kept getting this eerie feeling. Something was definitely wrong, but I can't make out what it is. Why are we the only ones in the forest? Does Commander Erwin have some plan no one knows about? Or does he have no idea what's going on as well? Was the right wing being wiped out have anything to do with all this?
I looked around at everyone hoping for some kind of answer. But all I saw on their faces was fear, and confusion. I could tell we were all scared just to ask Captain Levi a question.
Just then I hear footsteps. Loud footsteps, like they belonged to a titan. I guess everyone heard it too because we all looked behind us. The footsteps were getting louder and louder and louder by the second.
Soldiers emerged from the trees, but they were wiped away almost instantly by what looked like... a female titan.
