Catlynn's POV

"Ah yes, what a way to get in the Christmas spirit. Burning my moms apartment down." I said.

"Why couldn't we make cookies and paint ornaments and make gingerbread houses in your own apartment?" Josie Block asked.

"Also, isn't it a bit late to be doing this? It's Christmas Eve. And we should be out doing last minute shopping and instead I have paint all over my hands." Matilda Henson said. I sighed and said, "Listen- did everyone bring their Secret Santa gift?"

"I got the worst person." Clementine Mack said. "I didn't even know what to get for them, I barely know them!"

"You literally just got adopted and joined the friend group five months ago- the rest of us have known each other for years!" Josie said. "Okay, so are we finishing this first or opening presents first?"

"At least let me put the cookies in the oven first!" I yelled.

"In the oven that isn't even preheated?" Keira Roland smirked. I groaned and banged my head against the wall.

"Okay, can someone make sure the oven is actually preheated this time? We can open some of the presents and when the oven goes off- we can put the cookies in and clean up this mess before my mom sees." I said.

"Wait a ding dang minute- your mom isn't home?" Penney Steingold asked. I sighed and said, "She's home, but she's taking a nap, apparently."

"With all this noise and clatter? She's sleeping with all this noise and clatter and isn't at all concerned for her daughters sanity?" Keira smirked.

"Shut up." I said, and then the smoke alarm went off. Elle came out of her room and said, "Sunshine, I told you not to make a mess..."

"Hi Mom!" I said cheerfully, trying to mask the fact that something was burning.

"It's coming from the toaster oven." Penney said. She opened the oven and said, "Alright, who made tater tots and didn't tell anyone?"

Matilda reached over and popped a burned tater tot in her mouth. "Was me. I was hungry."

"Oh my God, get out." I said jokingly. Matilda laughed and Elle sighed.

"Sunshine, please...don't burn the place down, okay?"

"Okay, Mom, bye, love you."

Once Elle was in her room, I turned to my friends and they all gasped.

"SECRET SANTA!" the younger ones yelled at the same time. The oven beeped and I put the cookies in, and I ran to the Christmas tree and pulled out all the Secret Santa gifts.

I had to get a gift for Valerie Salazar-Roland. And truth be told, I had no idea what to get for her. There are only a few things she loves in this world, history, her dad, playing flute, banana bread, and frogs. And I tried to combine all of those into one, but that failed.

So I settled on going way over budget, buying Valerie a pansexual pride T-shirt, a phone case with the Italian flag and a PopSocket with a frog on it, a red case for her flute, some sheet music, and a recipe for banana bread that I printed out and laminated.
