The sun was shining on a beautiful Saturday in June, and all over New York City, a friend group of nine was waking up and getting ready to meet each other.

Catlynn McLemore was lacing up her pink, purple, and blue Converse that she wore to her high school prom.

Matilda Henson was on her hands and knees painting the lesbian flag on a spare pair of roller skates she bought at Goodwill.

Valerie Salazar-Roland was zipping up the pansexual pride dress she wore to her first school dance.

Josie Block was tying a bisexual flag around her like a cape.

Keira Roland was putting the finishing touches on a piece of Pride art she had been working on for weeks.

Penney Steingold was heading to the children's hospital before going to meet her friends, so the kids that were there could have a Pride celebration too.

Clementine London Mack had just gotten her first non-binary pride flag after successfully coming out to her mom.

Tripler Kinnunen kissed his boyfriend one last time as he headed on the plane back to New York.

Miriam Morris pulled into the city waving a pride flag out the window with a huge smile.

And in a matter of hours, the group would be reunited. The younger ones still weren't out of school for the year and the adults were working hard, so this was one of the only occasions they could spend together.

And none of them could wait another minute.

"Mom! There they are!" Clementine London Mack said, scrambling out of her mom's car with her pride flag in tow. "Hey guys!"

"Clem!" Catlynn McLemore said, running to hug the 11-year-old. "Hey, kiddo! How are you?"

"I'm good! I came out to my mom!"

"OH MY GOD!" Matilda Henson said. "Clem! How did it go?"

Clem's bronze skin turned a soft shade of pink as she looked down at her shoes. "Really well, actually. I'm really proud of myself."

"We're all proud of you too, kid. Immensely proud."

Clem grinned as the rest of the kids started to arrive. Penney Steingold and Josie Block arrived together, then Keira Roland and Valerie Salazar-Roland, and finally, Tripler Kinnunen and Miriam Morris.

"I'm so sorry I'm late, traffic was terrible." Miriam said.

"I'm never gonna get over that Jersey accent." Matilda said teasingly.

"Shut up!" Miriam said. "I can barely understand your New York one."

The group giggled and the ones who were just dropped off waved goodbye to their parents.

"I guess we're on our own for the next few hours. I just realized that we didn't really plan this well, there's nothing gay going on right now."

Josie snickered and gestured to the entire group, implying that the 'gay going on' was them walking around New York for six hours. "We'll go to a Pride Parade one of these years."

"We've been putting this off for three years." Penney said. "First time we tried to go it rained, then one of us caught a cold, I forgot who. Then someone forgot that final exams were a thing and had to cram-study the night before."

"That someone was you, Steingold." Clementine said. "Stop lying, we're not going to hold that against you for the rest of your life. Though it does give Evvy and I some pretty good blackmail.."

"Oh my God, Clem, you're hopeless." Penney said. "Plus, Ev isn't even here right now!"

"That's because you forgot to invite them."

"I- okay, fine, you win."

"Stop with your bickering, both of you. I want coffee, anyone have $5 to spare?" Keira said.

"Go get your own coffee." Matilda said.

"Rude." Keira said, pulling out their debit card and starting to head the other way.

"Now that Keira's out of the picture, okay, that sounded rude. Starting over. Now that Keira's out of our hair- wait. Okay. Third time's the charm. Since Keira's getting coffee, what do you guys want to do? Sit and wait?" Catlynn said.

"I guess. But when they get back, we're causing enough chaos to last us a lifetime."
