Catlynn's POV

"There's a difference between ballet slippers and heels, Clementine." I said. Clementine Mack was waiting in the wings in full costume...all except for her shoes. She was supposed to be wearing ballet slippers, but she instead wore the sparkly red heels she wore everywhere. I'm not gonna lie, they looked good with her costume, but who dances ballet in ballroom dance shoes anyway?

"Come on, Kit! Why are you taking this so seriously? Let loose for once and have a little fun!" my girlfriend, Red Ashley, said. I simply sighed and glared at her. "Listen, Red, there's actual people in the audience, including the rest of our families, and no one here paid $25 to see a group of kids-"

"And adults." Matilda Henson interjected.

"No one here paid $25 to see a group of kids and their parents screw up on stage and make a fool of themselves. I don't know about you guys, but ballet is my passion, and I want to make myself and my family proud, understood?" I snapped. I rarely, if ever, snap or raise my voice, but this was irking me a little.

"Understood." my friends and their parents said reluctantly. I sighed and said, "Good. Now let's get this show on the road!"

_________

This was a complete and utter disaster.

It seemed like Josie and I were the only people that weren't screwing this up, and even the adults, professional actors for goodness sake, looked confused as to what was going on.

Act 1 went surprisingly well, except Penney was right. She was not strong enough to pick up Josie, and neither was Red. Both girls dropped Josie on the floor by total accident.

"You ready to go, Valerie?" I asked Valerie Salazar-Roland right before the Spanish Dance. Valerie nodded and said, "As ready as I'll ever be. At least I'm with my Daddy!"

"Someone's actually excited for this." Matilda said sarcastically. I swatted her and said, "You're doing the Arabian dance, my first ever solo with ballet. Don't screw this up."

"Alright, McLemore, calm down! I'll try my best but I have the grace of a dying manatee!" Matilda said.

I looked around at the scene backstage. Most of the kids were doing their dances with their parent and their significant other, except for Josie, who was doing her dance with Stephanie and her uncle Andrew, and Matilda, who was going completely solo. And Andrew did not look happy to be here.

"Go Valerie!" we all cheered from backstage as Valerie, George, and Reed did their dance. I smiled and then Matilda pushed by us and said, "It's my turn. Wish me luck."

"Yeah Tilda!" I cheered. She surprisingly was effortless, every move was sharp and flawless. She was a good dancer, even though she complained a thousand times that "I can't dance." I was honestly impressed with that girl, she had a lot of potential if she ever chose to do ballet in the future.

"MY TURN!" Keira yelled. I shushed them as there was a show going on, and then Keira ran onstage with Will and her platonic partner, Avery Singh. Unlike Matilda, Keira was seriously making a fool out of themselves, tripping over her own feet at some points.

"I'm honestly scared that she's gonna fall down and knock out her teeth." Josie said from behind me. I sighed and said, "Yeah, me too, but there's been no injuries so far. It's only a one minute long dance, she'll make it."

Keira ran off stage, out of breath and sweaty. "Come on Josie, it's your turn!"

"YAY!" Josie said, getting into position and taking a deep breath. She then ran on stage and did her dance perfectly, mastering all the tricks and jumps.

Stephanie and Andrew mostly stood there and completely copied Josie's every move. I honestly felt bad for the parents, they got thrown into this at the drop of a hat, and didn't have as much time to rehearse as the kids.

Josie ran backstage and threw herself on me, and after she let go, she started to undo her ballet bun. "GO CLEMENTINE!"

Clementine was amazing, even if her specialty wasn't ballet. She was only ten years old, yet she was so talented. After her dance, she ran off and hugged Valerie, who was her best friend.

And finally, there was Penney. Clumsy, uncoordinated, goofy Penney.

And as expected, she did not take her dance seriously. Neither did Alex Brightman, her brother. They were both laughing the entire time, falling down and messing up, but they seemed to have so much fun. Penney's been through so much, she needed to have fun for once in her life.

"And that's a wrap!" I yelled about 20 minutes later. "One more year of The Nutcracker down!"
