"Auntie Cat?" my niece, Acadia asked me as I cleaned up the board game we were playing. I nodded slowly and said, "Yeah, Cia?"

"Aren't you dating Auntie Red?" Acadia asked. I nodded and said, "Yeah, I am." I had accidentally told Acadia I was bi a few months ago, but the kid was seven years old.

"How did you meet her?" Acadia asked, getting up on the counter and dangling her legs off the side. I smiled sweetly at my niece and said, "Well, um, your auntie and I have known each other for a long time, Acadia."

"How long?" Acadia asked, giggling slightly. Oh God. I completely forgot that the crash was part of Red and I's story. I didn't want to scare the kid, but it was kind of an important piece of the puzzle.

"Well, um, we were in eighth grade. You know how I play the saxophone?" I asked. Acadia nodded frantically. "Auntie Red played the clarinet. She was my other friend's best friend at the time. I was the new girl at my middle school."

"So you dated her because of a clarinet?" Acadia squealed. I laughed and said, "Acadia, it wasn't that easy. See, not everyone knew I was bi. They just thought I liked boys and boys alone. And in the same way, not everyone knew Red only liked girls. Even I didn't know Red only liked girls."

As I continued the story, I realized that I had to tell Acadia everything for the story to make sense. I had to tell her about Violet. (specifically how she was Red's cousin)

"And there was a girl named Violet who didn't like that Red and I hung out with each other, even if it was just as friends at one point. And I didn't know why for a while. Then Red told me Violet was her cousin." I said.

"They both have color names!" Acadia said, laughing. I laughed and said, "Red isn't Red's real name. Her real name is Elizabeth. Even I don't know how she got the nickname. And Violet...she isn't a nice person. She was really rude to both Red and I, but mostly me. Something...scary happened to me when I was 13 and she thought it was fake."

"That's mean!" Acadia yelled. You and me both, kid.

"Yep. And then...something happened to Red and I thought she had died. But she didn't. And that's when we got together. She told me she liked girls, and I told her the same thing. But I also like boys as well." I said.

"And that's okay?" Acadia asked. I nodded frantically. This kid was seven years old and I just explained to her that being gay wasn't a crime.

"Auntie Cat?" Acadia asked. I turned towards her and nodded. "Is there more to the story?"

I nodded and said, "Well, Red and I broke up at the end of eighth grade, and then something happened to me. And then when I started high school, she asked to get back together."

Acadia nodded and hopped off the counter. "Auntie? So if I like girls, it's okay?"

Oh God. I didn't expect a seven year old to come out to me today.

I nodded slowly and said, "Of course, Acadia. You can love whoever you want." It was all I could think of to say. "But are you sure you like girls?"

"I do know that boys are gross and girls are cute." Acadia said. I laughed. It was nice to see my niece so figured out.

"Auntie Cat? Thanks for telling me the story." Acadia said. I laughed and said, "Anytime, Acadia. And when you're a little older, I'll tell you how I got adopted. Your moms gonna be home in a few, let's clean up."

"Okay!"
