"How does it feel to finally be free, Wooyoung?", the white shadow above him asked with a gentle voice.
Wooyoung was surrounded by black. It was like he was floating in the middle of nothing. Only the white shadow stood out from the blackness around him.
"W-Where am I? Why is it so dark?", the boy whispered. He wasn't scared, but filled with curiosity. How did he come here? And most importantly, why?
"This place doesn't have a name, Wooyoung", the shadow chuckled sympathetically. "Your existence as a ghost was the stage between life and death. This, right here, is a place closer to death."
"That sounds as if anyone turns into a spirit before they actually die...", Wooyoung mumbled.
"That's not totally right. You were a ghost because you still had a mission to do before you could go to the afterlife."
"S-so... am I not a ghost anymore? What am I then?"
"You succeeded your mission, which was finding out who killed you. Now, you have to decide whether to cross the bridge to the afterlife or not", the shadow replied.
In front of Wooyoung the blurred image of a white bridge appeared. It was so long that he couldn't see what was on the other side.
"What happens when I go to the afterlife?", the boy asked quietly, staring at the bridge as if it would cast a spell over him. It was beautiful and some unknown power drew him towards it. He felt like all his problems would disappear if he just stepped onto that bridge and walked to the other side.
"Sadly, I can't tell you that, Wooyoung. You have to decide without any information about the afterlife."
"W-Why am I even allowed to decide? I thought everyone just dies, without influencing their death. That doesn't make any sense-" Reluctantly, the boy forced his eyes away from the beautiful image in front of him to look at the white shadow again.
"In general, you're right about this. But there's a difference when it comes to you, my kid." Although, Wooyoung couldn't make out a face, it felt like the shadow was looking down at him like a father at his child.
"You have a soulmate on earth."
Immediately, his mind clouded with pictures and memories of San. Their little touches, hugs, kisses, even their fights were shown to Wooyoung like a movie playing in front of him.
Only now, he remembered how much he missed him. He didn't know for how long he was floating in this dark place already, but it felt like an eternity without the other boy.
"I'm sure you're thinking of him right now, hm?", the shadow asked gently.
Wooyoung could only nod, trying to suppress the tears welling up in his eyes.
"Do you want to go back to him? You would turn into a human again and live a normal life."
The boy started nodding even harder, but when his gaze fell on the bridge in front of him again, his nodding got slower until it totally stopped.
A river with sapphire blue water flowed under the bridge. It seemed like it was sunny, although there was no sun to be seen.
Wooyoung leaned his body in the direction of it and let his body float closer to the beautiful image.
"Once you touch it, you will be sucked into the afterlife and won't be able to go back", the shadow mentioned, a smile audible through its words.
It seemed to make Wooyoung's mind clear up a bit. Confused, he turned back around.
"Who even are you?", he asked with furrowed eye brows.
The shadow chuckled slightly. "I'm the Grim Reaper, Wooyoung."
"Aren't you supposed to kinda convince me to actually die then?"
"Not in your case, Wooyoung. It is your decision. Go back to your soulmate or leave everything behind and go to the other side." The Grim Reaper pointed vaguely in the direction of the bridge.
And again, Wooyoung was drawn to it like someone would pull him towards it. He floated closer until it was merely a few centimeters apart from him.
The beauty of the image clouded his mind, replacing the memories of San with other thoughts. He wanted to be a part of this beauty. He needed to be a part of it.
The boy lifted his right hand to touch the image...
But a second, before he could actually come in contact with it, a heartbreaking scream hissed through his head.
Startled he backed away.
What was happening?
Another scream, followed by a sob.
"Wooyoung, come back to me! I can't live without you, I- I need you, Wooyoung, please come back-"
San.
The voice, without a doubt, belonged to San.
And as if he was awoken from a dream, he quickly brought a bigger distance between him and the image of the bridge.
"I- I was almost gone.. I almost l-left my S-Sannie alone." Wooyoung panted heavily. Suddenly, he did feel fear at this place and he wanted nothing more than to get away from here. Get away from this endless darkness around him.
"I want to go back!", he yelled at the white shadow above him, panicked. "Get me away from here. I want to go back to Sannie, please bring me back!"
"As you wish", the shadow smiled. "Close your eyes, Wooyoung."
