The next day Elvira had been working with Viktor on the water purifiers all day, but they didn't talk much. Partly because Elvira was still very tired, but her body wouldn't let her rest. After her meeting with Silco, she was even more determined to be successful. The words science dream echoing in her mind. He didn't take Elvira seriously, but she'll show him. She'll show them all what she can do. She'll show Jayce, who thought her purifiers were a waste of time.
"Elvira?" Viktor snapped her out of her deep thoughts. "Hmm?" "You have been staring at that screwdriver for a pretty long time now," he pointed to the screwdriver Elvira was holding. She had gripped it so tightly her knuckles were turning white. "Something on your mind?" he asked, lifting the safety goggles off his face.
"I just wanna do something good, you know? I want to die knowing that I made a difference in someone's lives," she thought aloud. She looked at Viktor who was leaning on his cane. "Like you. You'll go down as the co-inventor of hextech and will be forever known for making a huge difference in everybody's lives."
"But you're not going to die tomorrow, are you?" he asked her. "Huh?" "You have time. You have quite a lot of time actually, to figure out something that will secure you a spot in the history books," he smiled. "This for example," he motioned to the thing they were working on now. The purifier. "It's not enough. Plus how will we even produce enough to place around the undercity, nobody wants to fund this," she complained.
"Yet." "Do you really think any rich person wants to spend that amount of money on cleaning up the undercity? They won't gain anything from it, so why would they?" she asked. Viktor just shrugged in response. "You never know what the future brings," he pulled down his goggles again and went back to work.
"My mother was a high priestess of a refugee camp along the coast of Navori in Ionia," Elvira started telling her story to Viktor, explaining her magic. "My father traveled there once to help her camp with treating the soldiers, fighting against the noxians, and giving the people hope. He fell in love with my mother, and she with him," Viktor had stopped working but kept his goggles on while he listened.
"They got married right outside Fae'lor, and my father told me they could hear the screams and the clashing of weapons from the battlefield during the ceremony," Elvira started fumbling with her fingers as she spoke. A habit she had when she was slightly nervous or uncomfortable.
"They wanted everyone to be reminded that even though they were having a happy moment at that time, there were still people suffering just hours away. And when they had me, they swore to raise me as a child of Ionia, and they taught me how to respect the nature around me."
"I was blessed with magic like my mother, and when I was 6 years old I started helping her heal the wounded that would come into our camp. I was only able to do small cuts and scrapes at the time, but as I grew older, my magic grew stronger."
Viktor lifted his goggles up to rest against his forehead, and looked at her as she spoke, to indicate that he was listening. "When I was 15, I came back to Piltover. My father is originally from Piltover, but that I assume you figured," she chuckled a little, causing Viktor to smile as well. Her laugh was soft and warm.
"And when I was in Ionia, I pulled my magic from the things around me. Everything there is magical. The animals, the people, the rocks and mountains, the water, everything. So when I came here and tried to use my magic, it wasn't as easy. Since there is nowhere to pull the magic from in Piltover. That's why I get so sick and dizzy when I use my magic. I pull it from my own essence," she forced a smile, to act like it didn't scare her.
Elvira was tapping her fingers on the desk as she needed a moment to gather her thoughts before she continued to speak. "Why do you use your magic when you know it's hurting you?" he asked her after giving her some time. She chuckled softly to herself before looking down at her fingers, still tapping the desk. "I've seen many people hurt. I have seen people die even, many times. And it hurts to know that I could have done something to prevent it," she started before she felt a lump form in her throat.
She swallowed hard before continuing. "I have the ability to heal, and I would be a monster if I walked around and saw the horrors of the world, knowing I could do my part to fix it, and not do anything," she looked at Viktor. "I know you feel the same, in some way." "I do, wanting to help people is the reason I came here. To the academy," he said.
"But, try to be careful, using your own essence like that, it could kill you," he warned her, feeling his heart skip a beat as he said those words aloud. He had grown to like Elvira quite a bit during their many late nights in the lab. He considered her a dear friend, and he did not like to lose his friends.
"I know, but still. I can't sit on the sidelines and watch," she smiled sadly at him. He knew she was scared. He could see right through that fake smile she always wore because he too was scared. Scared about the future of his own life.
His health was slowly declining as well, and he knew there would come a day where he would wither. He was trying his hardest to make the time he has left worth it, and that's why he spent every waking second of it to try and better the world. The same as Elvira had been doing for the past 10 months.
"Tell me, where are you going when you disappear?" he asked referring to the evening prior when Jayce had gathered everyone to watch as he yelled at Elvira. She still didn't want to tell him the whole truth though, but she couldn't think of a decent lie either. "I have another apartment, where I retreat when I need space. My father got it for me last time he visited," she explained while picking up her notes and her pencil.
Viktor took this as a hint that she was no longer interested in continuing the conversation, and he respected that. He nodded at her answer, before going back to welding the two pieces of metal together.
