A few days had gone by since Elvira's conversation with Viktor, and Jayce was still not talking to her. She had explained herself to Aya as well, and she was understanding. She wasn't too fond of Elvira hurting herself for others, but she understood her reasons for it.
Elvira was currently sitting in her lab with Aya, as they were working on their elixir. "So I was thinking," Elvira started while turning around on her chair to face Aya, who was sitting on the floor reading a book about medicine and herbs. "We only cut off the flowers after we've watered the plant with the elixir, but shouldn't we be doing it in the opposite order?" Aya looked up at Elvira confused before realization hit her.
"Oh, of course!" she jumped up, causing her book to fall off her lap and to the floor with a soft thud. "We need to cut it off first!" she gasped. "Well yeah. If this were to ever be strong enough to be used on humans, they wouldn't have the elixir already in their system when they lose a body part, they would only get the elixir after the accident has already happened," Elvira said just to make sure they were thinking the same thing.
"How stupid of me to not think of that," Aya groaned. "Stupid of us, I didn't think of that until now, so we're both stupid," Elvira chuckled before walking over to the plant sitting in the corner. "Should we test it now?" she asked as she looked over to Aya for permission. When she nodded, Elvira picked up the pair of cutters lying next to the plant and snipped off the smallest flower bloom.
Just as the flower hit the table, there was a knock on the door. "I'll get it," Aya skipped over to the door, as Elvira grabbed the tiny vial of elixir from the shelves. She uncorked it, and dripped a few drops into the soil, and stared expectantly at the plant, but was soon interrupted.
"It's for you," Aya said carefully, after gaining Elvira's attention by poking her slightly on the shoulder. "Oh," she turned towards the door and saw Jayce standing there awkwardly shifting his weight back and forth between his two legs. The nervousness radiated from him, and Elvira felt good about him being so uncomfortable. It gave her some sort of power trip. "Yes?" she asked as she crossed her arms across her chest.
"I just wanted to apologize. I wasn't thinking rationally the other day, and I lashed out at you. I'm sorry," he said while struggling to keep eye contact with Elvira. Her eyes wandered down to his very red cheek, and she realized someone had slapped him pretty hard across the face for it to be that sore.
"I know you're gonna do it again," she responded before turning around to look at the plant again, seeing a tiny bulb beginning to grow from where she had cut it. "I won't, I promise," Jayce walked into the lab, closing the door behind him. "You said that last time, and the time before that, and the time before that," she went on and on before Jayce interrupted her. "I get it."
"But I'll forgive you I guess. You and your mother are the only families I have here, so I can't really afford to lose that," she sighed. "But I have to ask you one more time to stop going to the undercity," Jayce tried one last time. "No," Elvira simply responded, and Jayce knew there was no use in arguing or trying to convince her.
"Whatever," he sighed. "Come by the lab tomorrow, will you? Both of you," he asked and Aya looked at Elvira confused before looking over at Jayce, waiting for him to explain why. "Viktor and I need fresh eyes. We're stuck with the hextech," he said, and Aya just nodded. "Sure," Elvira said before giving him a stern look, silently telling him to leave. He took the hint, and soon she was alone with Aya again.
"Don't you think you're being too hard on him?" she asked as she twirled a pencil between her fingers. "No, do you?" "No," Aya said as she smirked. "I think it's funny to watch. You're like siblings, and I don't have any siblings so it's fun to be able to watch some sibling rivalry," she chuckled and Elvira rolled her eyes at her comment. "We are not siblings, and thank god that himbo is not my brother," Elvira sighed and Aya started laughing. "That is so correct and not correct at the same time," she choked out, trying to catch her breath. Elvira only smirked, knowing Aya was gonna call Jayce that to his face.
The next day, Elvira woke up alone in her shared apartment, with a note on the kitchen counter from Aya.
Hello,
Just wanted to let you know that I woke up erly, so I ate brekfast and went over to they're lab already! So just eat and come over to!
-Aya
Elvira rubbed her face hard as she placed the letter back down on the counter, quickly frying herself some eggs, eating them as fast as possible before she put on her coat, and marched over to Jayce and Viktor's lab.
"You are a grown woman, a scientist, and are working on how to regrow limbs. But you can't write..." Elvira verbally attacked her friend the second she swung the door to the lab open.
"Happy birthday!" the three of them yelled as she stepped inside, catching her off guard, as she was too embarrassed with her friend to notice the cake on the table. "I have wine!" Aya cheered as she lifted the bottle above her head.
"I had totally forgotten about my birthday, I was too caught up in my projects," Elvira admitted as Aya handed her a slice of cake. "Really? You'd forget your own birthday?" Aya gasped. "I forget a lot of things, and as I said, my projects have taken up all my brain space, so no room left for birthdays," she chuckled.
"Sorry I'm late!" someone spoke from the door, and Elvira looked over to see Aya's girlfriend, hands on her knees trying to catch her breath from running there. "Oh, we just got started, you want some cake?" Aya smiled and motioned at the cake. "Hello, Estrid," Elvira smiled at the girl as she plopped down on the sofa. "Happy birthday!" she said as she grabbed the cake from Aya, not wasting any more time before stuffing her face. "So cute," Aya muttered to herself as she looked at Estrid eating cake. If you could even call it eating.
"So you're 21 now, how does it feel? Do you feel older yet?" Jayce asked. "Yeah, super old. I think my hip is starting to feel stiff," Elvira sarcastically answered, and he just smiled at her comment. "Are you mocking me?" Viktor asked, and they all burst out laughing.
"Sorry," Elvira laughed, even though she knew Viktor was only joking. It was nice to see him enjoying himself for a change. During the time she had known him, he spent almost all of his time either in the lab working, in the lab reading, in the lab doing whatever, and the very little time he spent sleeping. Elvira had never seen him do something for fun. She had asked him about it once, but he reassured her that science was fun to him, and he wouldn't want to do anything else than what he was currently doing.
Elvira coughed into her elbow, which caused Aya to look at her worriedly. "Shit, you're getting sick! I knew I shouldn't have let you stay up all night to work on the elixir!" she walked over to place her wrist against Elvira's forehead. "I'm fine, it was just a cough," she chuckled, but Aya was still worried. "You should take a few days off. Get some rest, get back on your feet before you do any work. And that includes no magic!" she said sternly, and Elvira knew better than to disobey.
Aya's mother used to be a medic, so Aya was always paranoid when someone got sick, fearing it was something serious. Elvira had tried to get her to realize that 90% of the time, it's just a common cold, but she wouldn't listen.
A slight fever? Bedrest. A sore throat? Bedrest. A headache? Bedrest. But Elvira listened to her anyway, even though she was always overreacting, just so her friend could feel at ease. "Fine, but can I eat my cake before you put me in Aya's hospital?" Elvira mocked her, and Aya lightly punched her shoulder in response. "Be kind or I won't make you soup!" she threatened and Elvira quickly shut up. She wanted soup.
