Lily wasn't exactly sure when sleeping with James Potter had become a regular occurrence. All she knew was one night after a mission she'd followed him back to his rooms and woken up there the next day. Over the following couple of weeks, maybe months, she'd begun growing used to the smell of his bedsheets and the soft weight of Lumos as he leaped onto the bed with them. She'd grown accustomed to James' safety, and his featherlight kisses anywhere and everywhere under the cover of darkness.

They hadn't told anyone, though Lily wasn't sure what they would tell, as sleeping with someone wasn't exactly an announcement to make over dinner – parents present – when there was no labeled relationship to follow. And so they would sneak in and out of each other's room in the morning, slipping into their own rooms and hoping no one noticed anything. It wasn't as though either of them was eager to share the news as of yet, Lily in particular had insisted on not defining their relationship so soon, and James hadn't wanted to complicate their lives any further. So they'd agreed to keep their unlabelled paramour clandestine.

They'd come close to being caught a few times, mostly by Sirius or Dorcas attempting to burst into James' room at all hours. Like the present, at just gone 4 am, they heard a knocking on James' room, followed by a shout from Remus Lupin.

"PRONGS! You in there buddy?"

Lily's eyes shot open, as did James, and they shared a look of panic.
"Shit!" She hissed, only growing more concerned as she remembered her frankly undignified state of undress from underneath his bedsheets.

"I need to go!" She whispered, untangling herself from his arms and searching for her various items of clothing.

James watched her from his bed, attempting halfheartedly not to laugh.
"Just go!" He whisper-shouted, "climb out the vent or something!"

Lily huffed, hurriedly pulling her t-shirt over her head before rushing over to peck him on the lips.

James chuckled just as Remus banged on the door again.
"Just a second mate!" He called, then more quietly, teasingly, to Lily, "oh so we're doing goodbye kisses now, are we?"

Without a second glance, Lily presented him with her middle finger before vaulting up and pulling herself through the vent.

"That's more like it."

"So," Marlene began conversationally to James as they rifled through files offered to them by Ravenclaw ahead of their mission, "is Dorcas in the business for a new field partner?"

"What?"

"Well, you've been having so much fun with Lily recently that—"

"There's nothing between me and Lily," James interrupted coldly. "And even if there was, spies don't have 'field partners,' only people they work best with. And you do fine with Sirius."

"I do fine with anyone."

"Exactly."

"So why is Mr. Grumpy looking so upbeat these days, huh? Who gave you an extra lollipop?"
