Ciel Phantomhive, the watchdog of the Queen. Everyone must have heard of his tale, the boy whose family was murdered on his twelfth birthday and after overcoming obstacles, choose to make a pact with the devil to fulfill his revenge.
That you know more than I am about it, I bet. But did you know that the Phantomhive family isn't only composed of Vincent and Ann Phantomhive? They had an older sibling, Charlotte. The first-born of Comtess Claudia Phantomhive was a girl, Charlotte Phantomhive.
She was the heir of the compass Phantomhive. After all, this special family was allowed by the Crown since its establishment, the round table knights, to have a female heir inherited the family title. Despite the habit of Great Britain to discard daughters in favour of handing the title to their sons.
Charlotte was the perfect heiress, akin to a well-sharpened sword old of centuries. Precise, beautiful, yet deadly when desired. Then why didn't she become the watchdog of the Queen and Comtess Phantomhive? How did Vincent Phantomhive inherit the title instead of her?
.....
1864, eleven years before Ciel's birth, Paris, Sarah Bernhardt's salon
"Have you heard? Some English lords are turning Paris upside down!" Said Clara Schumman with a smirk towards Brahms and Liszt. "I think it is Phantomhive or something like that."
"Oh, oh! Don't you also come from London, Oliver?" Inquired Sarah Bernhardt smoking, exalting smoke on the said Charles. "You must be at least acquainted to them, no?"
"Hum..... Yes, they are pretty well known." Managed to mumble Oliver.
This was going to be the hassle. She felt it! She had to react quickly or else [adieu] her liberty and her own will.
She? Yes, she, you have read it well. Allow me to clarify this. Charlotte Phantomhive had run away from her home.
Yes, as unbelievable as it was, the perfect heiress of Claudia Phantomhive just ran away. Why you might ask? She simply didn't want to be tied up to the expectations of her family. She had the thirst for adventures and being her true self, not the future watchdog of the Queen.
Not that she could have successfully managed her [fugue] if Queen Victoria hadn't been informed of her decision. Her good friend secretly approved of her decision. She had never revealed her whereabouts to her family.
When she was six years old, she had asked her mother why people were scared of them. Claudia answered because we imposed law and order in the name of the Crown.
She had asked further about this demanding explanation. Don't Scotland Yard and the Courtrooms already fulfill this task? No, the Phantomhive was the trump card of the British Monarchy, the wild weapon that is let free to roam when the menace has been unaddressed for too long. Chaos and deaths usually unfollowed. This was the sacred duty of the Phantomhive, the very reason of their existence and their position in high society.
Charlotte didn't find this duty unbearable to execute, but what bothered her was that her whole life had to be defined by it. She was destined to live and die as a Watchdog. She would never be anything else than the mad dog of the Queen. The eldest Phantomhive couldn't accept that. She wouldn't let this dictate her life. She had the thirst of exploring and living her life as she saw it fit.
"I have heard that this family is madly searching for their missing eldest daughter." Gossiped Madeleine Lemaire leaning towards them as if fearing that someone might hear them. "It is said that they have turned upside down in the Underworld of London. The criminal rate is near zero due to this. Criminals and crime syndicates have even offered to help them search and beat up themselves any of their members who are stirring troubles."
