July 2019

"Zara! Breakfast is ready on the table!"

I quickly snatched my black handbag with my phone from my bed and ran down the stairs.

I gave Samira a kiss on her cheek and sat down at the table.

"Where are you going?" Samira asked confused when she saw my outfit.

"I'm going to work, Samira," I muttered with a full mouth and took a sip from my glass of water.

Samira frowned in surprise. "Work? Since when? Where and with whom?" She took a seat next to me at the table.

I held her hand lovingly and gave her a reassuring look. "Today is my first day at work. That Spanish restaurant downtown called Centra?" Samira nodded with realization. "There. Esma works there too and she is satisfied with her job because of the flexibility they offer for," I looked uncomfortably at my plate. "-personal circumstances."

"Esma from group therapy?"

I nodded.

I got to know Esma through her sister. Her sister Noor and I both follow group therapy. It was an afternoon when I ran into Esma outside the building. She was running back and forth in panic, looking for Noor. After a long search, I heard Noor crying in a toilet cubicle. In a full mental breakdown phase. After a long wait and reassurance, she came out of the cubicle and threw her arms around her sister. Since then we have gradually built up a friendly bond.

"If you're worried about money-" Samira started but I quickly stopped her.

"No, it's not that. The psychologist advised us to seek distraction and I think this will help me."

She ran her hands over her face. "Does Faid know about this?"

I removed her hands from her face and held them. "I have informed Faid about this and he thinks it's a great idea."

She finally nodded and gave me a smile. "Be careful, okay? It-it's all still fresh and-and I-"

"Samira, I've been back from that place for a half year and I'm very grateful for that. Just let it go, okay? I don't want to think about that."

She held my cheek warmly and nodded with a smile. "As long as you're okay."

"Samira!" we suddenly heard Faid screaming from above. "Mira, is awake!"

I stuffed a chocolate bun and finished my glass.  "Thanks, Sami. I'm leaving."

"Be careful," Samira muttered as I tied my shoelaces.

I slung my bag over my shoulder and nodded.  "Don't worry and give Mira a kiss from me." I closed the door in a hurry and ran to the bus stop.

I got on the bus that drove away not much later and took a seat somewhere in the back.

"Zara! Zara, get out of your room!"

I ignored Faid's banging on the door and stared aimlessly at the white wall in front of me.

"Zara! If you don't get out now, I'll break the door!"

Dare. Dare. Dare.

"Open up, Zara!"

I put my hands to my ears and let out a scream of frustration.

Why is it never quiet here?
