I looked at the image in front of me with tears in my eyes.
Samira who had the newborn Seda in her arms and Faid who had an arm around them. Mira sat on the hospital bed as she gazed at Seda with admiration.
I pointed my phone at them and quickly snapped a picture of it.
"Soon we will be in the same position," Imran whispered in my ear. I took a step away from him.
Samira's mother looked our way and the corners of her mouth curled up. "Zara, now you." I felt my throat tighten with nerves. "When are you due, honey?"
"Uh-" My fingers started to fidget as I saw Faid looking at me inquiringly.
"Mama, let her go," Samira muttered exhaustively and gave me a small smile.
I let out a relieved sigh. Grateful for the rescue. "I'm going to get some fresh air."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Faid frowning.
"Alone," I emphasized when I saw Imran take a step forward. He let out a sigh.
As soon as I stepped out of the hospital, I felt the nerves go away.
It was late September and the heat was starting to leave the city, giving us a cool breeze at last.
I closed my eyes and enjoyed the wind that flew by.
Feeling my phone vibrate in my pocket, I opened my eyes. I took my phone out of my pocket and answered without looking. "Hello?"
"Mommy."
I choked on my breath. My grip on my phone tightened as I muttered, "E-ela?"
"Yes mommy."
I couldn't believe my ears. I hadn't heard her voice in so long.
"Ela," I sobbed on the phone. "My baby."
"Mommy, I missed you!"
I laughed through my tears. "I-I missed you too, babydoll." I wiped my tears. "Where are you, honey? Mommy will come to pick you up now. Tell me the place, honey."
"Mommy, I-"
Suddenly I heard a buzz in the background.
"Ela?" Panic was out of my voice. I plucked at the bottom of my black cloak. "Ela!"
The line was broken on the other end.
Frustrated, I slammed my phone on the floor.
I walked back and forth with my fingers in my hair.
What now? How am I going to find Ela now?
I started cursing.
The sound of the shaking made me look to the floor where my phone was. I picked up the phone again and swore even harder at the crack in the display.
A message from an unknown number. Building opposite the harbor in half an hour.
F*ck, I don't have a car. Realization hit me and I fumbled in my bag where I took out Imran's car keys.
Imran had given me a copy of his car key a year ago for emergencies.
I didn't wait a minute longer and ran to the parking lot.
~
I parked in front of the building and got out of the car.
Chills ran through me as I looked around. There was no one.
