December 2010
Bob had kept his promise to Awsten almost a full year ago when he told him that he would protect the both of them.
Not long after the incident happened, they moved out of their parents house and into an apartment just big enough for the both of them. Neither of them wanted to live in such a big space ever again, it was comfortable and they had each other which was all that mattered.
The man Michael who looked after Laura that night, was the one who spent the most time with them on a day to day basis. Laura had even become friends with his daughter, which Awsten was thankful to see.
He never found himself fully trusting the men that were around them constantly, he found it suspicious that the school never questioned what happened to their parents, it felt like the rest of the world when on without a blink of an eye even after something like that had happened to them.
His birthday was the following month, he was turning 18. He never went back to school after his parents died, Bob had signed him up for a GED program that he finished in 1/4 the time it usually took to complete, so all of his free time was focused on helping Laura with whatever she needed.
Bob had also put him into a drivers ED class, and Awsten had his license for around 6 months now.
He had gotten a call earlier in the day, from one of Bob's henchmen saying that they he wanted to talk to Awsten.
No one found the nickname henchmen as funny as he did.
The two of them met fairly often, Bob liked to check in to see how Laura was doing in school and how Awsten was doing in general so he figured it was just another one of those meetings.
He had kept his job at the deli, working while Laura was in school and he had finally saved up enough money to buy himself a car.
It wasn't the nicest car by any means, and old Honda CRV but Awsten liked it. It was the first thing he had ever done for himself, and he was proud of it.
Bob had offered for one of his men to pick Awsten up, but he quickly disagreed.
One of the things he enjoyed most about owning his own car was being able to be by himself for a little while at a time. There was always a car following not far behind him, part of the protection him and his sister were given but he had convinced them stop getting in the car with him.
If you asked Awsten, he would probably say that half of the guys were also terrified of his driving and hated the music that he played in the car so that played a part of it.
He hated the fact that he had been keeping such a big secret from Laura, she had no idea what the men that were constantly around them were involved in.
All he ever wanted to do was protect her, he just feared that keeping something like this from her would harm her more in the future.
To any outsider, the base looked like any regular building, it was right outside of a quiet neighborhood, expertly disguised as offices for a variety of different practices. Awsten was never quite sure how they kept from the police for as long as they had, but he also really never wanted to know anymore information than he needed to about any of it.
