四十一 To curry for favor or to ignore?

A circular space was created for the entrance, there, a man-made lake was built planted with lotus flowers blooming in the spring along with willow trees creating a shimmer of turtles as the breeze collided with its leaves. A miniature of stones formed as mountains could be found on the other side as well as a small bamboo forest standing tall into the west area of the garden.

The breeze picked up as her skin tingled with the sun's rays, Meng Jia Yi wasn't aware of the beauty of nature as she was currently facing a beast that could potentially ruin her life.

Pastries on small wooden boxes are differentiated in drawers; Mung bean paste, red bean cake as well as osmanthus jelly paired with water chestnut cake. The small tea cups were placed according to the seats, hands drumming into the stone slab as she watched the prince in the corner of her eyes- looking for any potential threats of movement.

"My lady mist been frightened this past few months" his eyes lowered as he said those in an apologetic tone. He didn't even dare stare into my eyes. "Forgive this prince for the carelessness that this prince has presented"

"It is not his highness fault, this one is highly honored for the prince to remember me" bashful, pretends to lower her eyes to the ground in embarrassment to hide her true feelings.

The third prince chuckled, it was as if mocking her, knowing that she was suffering from his sudden absence and not even a note has been passed in advance to make sure the preparations for the upcoming bride were fulfilled.

Even though she didn't like this marriage, who would like to get snubbed and throw stones at someone who has already fallen?

"Is it? Then this prince is glad" she would like to wipe that smirk off his face but it would be a knife next to her throat then.

Meng Jia Yi looked at the prince, not in the eyes because she would be called preposterous, not that she cared and asked the question she was begging to be answered.

"Your highness?"

"Hm?" He hums, lifted his eyes to meet hers; if she was like any normal girl in this period she would have madly blushed in crimson and couldn't open her mouth in embarrassment.

"Why does your highness-"

"Drop the formalities, after all, you are my betrothed" his lips quirked up in a smile.

"Well then, your highness, why did you choose me to be your consort?"

Meng Jia Yi will never deliberately lower her esteem but in this case, the way she painted herself in his eyes was of a lowly, concubine-born daughter with no power, nor talent to even show to the public.

It's best if he refuses this marriage to happen because she cannot do it herself.

"Well, it's because you're different"

Trying to keep her distorted face from being shown, she kept her calm while imagining that she was strangling the prince.

It was a vague answer, he didn't even answer her question with a clear explanation.

"Pardon your highness? Different as to how?" She clenches her fingers underneath the table. She wanted to see how the prince would answer.

"It's because you are different from the norm. Do you remember, I first saw you in the flower viewing that was created by the Imperial Noble Consort Shu"

That was a long time ago, she did meet them but she has disguised herself as a sick seedling there and didn't even gain any of the prince's attention.

"Do you remember? You even looked at me in wonder, with your lips wide open"
