一 The life of a prideful, unsuccessful lady
The intermittent clicking rang on the small dingy apartment where she sat down. Her apricot eyes squinted from behind her lenses as she reviews the chapters that she has on her mind. One that she has finished in an hour, another bout of spurt from her imagination that left her convenience store lunch cold.
She stretched her hands up, crack- her fingers popped individually as she stood up to take the already cold lunch. There lay a poor excuse of a Char siu, she downed it with a cold glass of water from the table.
"I really need to clean up" her eyes wander around the small apartment that she rented. It was near where she works, the place could only her alone and she has to go out to her company's bathroom to take a shower.
The papers lying down on her table were messed up by the wind, the walls of this house have already stood half a century, it could not resist another storm.
The house well... a house from the countryside would be better from this. It is only a room in which she has shelved all her belongings, the apartment has a public toilet down the third floor but she doesn't use it for it was utterly disgusting. Flies would come and the smell of piss reeks that she has to close her window tightly making the house humid in the summer.
The walls were blotched, patches of white, and scraps of pasted posters of celebrities remained. The ceiling was only a head higher than her, there is no kitchen and only a broken sink and a faucet that doesn't work is accompanied with this room.
No bed but only a duvet back when she first got her paycheck. A bulb light that crackles every time her neighbor from the fourth floor thunderously walks. A cabinet that could barely fit the clothes she owns and some that have been handed down to her by her colleagues.
"F*ck, I don't want to go back home"
Home.
Home for her is going back to her family's house and being subjected to their orders as well as get taunted by her relatives who have an aspiring doctor in their homes. Her ears have grown calluses from hearing those words, it couldn't hurt her anymore.
Get a boyfriend- marry- have children; that's the normal route for women.
And she wants none of it.
Bzzt. Bzzt.
Her phone rang, the screen was battered and broken chips of it could be seen. She hasn't bought herself a phone for three years, all the money has gone down to her necessities.
SE: Come get your ass here, we have a new project!
Her eyes lit up and she took her bag- one that has everything she needed from her pen to her medicine. Her feet touched the ground and she was off, leaving her desolate house unattended, the screen on her laptop turning black.
It was a 15-minute walk that has become a 5-minute walk after she ran. Her chest moved up and down, her hair was a rat's ness and sticks to her now sweaty face. She was out on the street with a washed shirt and stained pants earning some curious looks from some onlookers which she did not pay attention to.
She steps into the familiar building with ease, nods at the security guard that was assessing her but then recognize her after bowing. Her coworkers didn't even budge to greet her; their heads occupied with work that would sustain them for a couple of weeks.
This company was founded three years ago by an ambitious dreamer who wanted to establish his online publishing platform. There are currently 80 employees, along with the security guards and the cleaning, cooking staff. It was bleak, like returning to your classroom on your third year of high school - desolate and filled with nothing but papers.
"You're finally here! I got it, YiYi! We finally have the drama project that will lift us to the peak! I can sense it- this drama would go red!" His eyes were bloodshot, fatigue was clearly seen in his brows yet he still never fails to see the world in a bright light.
"Old Dong, it seems like luck has shined upon you" she smiles, it has been long since she has smiled this genuinely.
Old Dong was their CEO, a poor one at that judging by his untrimmed hair and unshaven beard. His clothes were also from cheap second handed stores and his lanky tall figure doesn't amount much to 70 kilos.
He was also one of the few people that has outstretched their hand to her. She still rememberbers the time where she couldn't find any work after coming here in the city, her love for writing couldn't feed her nor could she find a work that needed her.
She felt like she was useless. In the sea of talented and ambitious humans is her, unsuccessful and prideful. There was nothing in her hands except a baggage.
Old Dong found her sleeping on the park, he sat with her and chatted his dreams. When he learned that she was also a dreamer like him, the two formed a unique bond between a boss and his employee but more like a mentor and his pupil.
"Thank you, thank you but you- what happened to you?"
She smiles in embarrassment, she had just finished her work and was told to come here abruptly.
"I called for her since she's one of the team leader here, the novel was acquired by her after all"
She turn around to see her number one rival and also the person that makes her work a living hell. Chen Hue, famous for her strict and perfectionist attitude that always collided with Old Dong's lax personality at his employees.
A successful woman both in work and life, she became her senior two years ago and has been improving leaps and bounds. She was both her motivator and existence of insecurity.
"Editor Chen, you should have given her a heads up, come on YiYi, go and get yourself well presented" Old Dong pushed her gently to thee corner earning a sigh from Editor Chen.
Old Dong ordered one of their coworkers to give some spare uniforms to her which made her thankful. Editor Chen was still there standing with hawk eyes, clicking her tongue as she looks at her in disappointment.
The moment she was about to roung into the corner, she heard her words, her eyes shut and her lips pressed into a thin line. She took a breath and strode into the bathroom, hoping that she could also be like the water; relaxed and unaffected by the world affairs.
"She should have applied as your daughter and not your worker"
Notes:
• Char siu is a Cantonese style of barbecued pork.
• Go red is associated with being popular and my guess is that it was related to the number of notifications you have on your social media account.***
