十九 Taking control of what is left of her
Today was the dragon boat festival and all of the unmarried ladies and men were outside to celebrate the festival. Naturally, it was also a good thing for Meng Jia Yi; a chance to leave the estate and go to the humble cottage of a poor, weak scholar that she has chosen after two months of being imprisoned into the ancestral temple and tortured to copy the book 'Admonitions of Woman' till one's hand bleed.
She was accompanied by XiXi alongside Meng Jia Rui and the other male offspring of the Prime Minister after getting their holidays.
The eldest miss and master left on their own as well as the two slick, scheming pair of second siblings. Her hand was clutching the small fist of her brother as they weaved through the ocean of people celebrating the festival.
"Don't ever let go of my hand and remember that if you got lost, we will meet at the entrance of the Westside gate"
"I remember Third sister" Meng Jia Rui was already smitten with the outside that he almost tugged her hand to go to the riverside where a dragon boat racing was about to start.
"Alright A'Rui, let your servant watch you, your third sister will exact vengeance on you today" she whispers to Meng Jia Rui before they went into the sea of people rushing in like waves into the river.
His eyes glowed in bewilderment before calming down, her sleeve was tugged and so she crouched to his level.
"Will third sister be alright?"
She patted his head softly, a gentleness that was once devoid in her body flowed to her eyes and she nodded to the little guy in confidence.
"Your third sister will be fine, just enjoy the festival and forget all your worries, hm?"
With a smile reflecting that of a lotus flower finally emerging out of the muddy river; Meng Jia Rui left the darkened path that will be one of the triggers of his gloomiest childhood and was replaced with the gentle assurance of his third sister, his family.
Soon he dived into the crowd like a chick finally emerging from its nest and has taken the step to fly.
"Miss, XiXi has already given the date and place where we'll meet the Matchmaker, it's just in the old tea house that XiXi went to other information before" her maid, XiXi replied and soon they were out.
Her eyes never wander around, not looking forward to the journey but to the destination, she's about to head into. It took them half an hour to reach just based on the traffic that the now narrow streets are refilled with peddlers selling trinkets as well as the aromatic scent of street food coming from the food stalls.
"Here it is miss!" XiXi pointed to the tea house that was void of the elegance of the nobility and was filled with the common people.
Gathered around were people drinking happily, toasting and watching the dragon boat race that started unknowingly; servers going back and forth to deliver teas and refreshments; men engaged in licentious talks as well as women bragging about their formidable sons and beautiful daughters.
"Matchmaker Ling, do you remember this girl?" XiXi pointed to herself as her miss watched their interactions from above.
"Oh yes! The sister with a shrew mind and have a business, right?" Old Ling stretched her hand and took out her paper fan. "Well, is she here? The scholar has already contacted me and gave a positive response after seeing her face. But... is it really your sister?"
XiXi was no match for old ginger like Old Ling and can only bite her tongue and nod.
"She is but she's from my stepmother's side, also a shrewd, cunning woman who took over my father's house" she cursed and couldn't help but hide her trembling hands from the old woman.
