Kate shifted in your arms before opening her eyes slowly.

" Morning sleepy head." You greeted her with a warm smile.
" Feeling better ? "

" Humm..." your best friend mumbled, still half asleep. " The left part of my face is killing me but apart from that I'm okay. Thanks for staying, really. "

You looked at Kate, noticing that her left eye was swollen. You should have definitely iced it yesterday before she went to sleep.

" We need to do something about your eye " You gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.
" Come on, let's go to the bathroom."

The brunette grumbled a bit but ended up agreeing to follow you to the bathroom.

As you gently cleaned the wound around Kate's eye with some
disinfectant, she let out a heavy sight.

" I look absolutely horrible." She stared at the mirror in front of her again. " See, this is why I never cry. Why the fuck are my eyes so puffy ? "

" They will get back to their normal state soon enough, don't worry." You reassured her. " And don't be ashamed of crying. It doesn't make you any less beautiful. "

You realized what you had just said with a gasp but hopefully Kate didn't seem to notice.

" You can go watch a movie while I make us breakfast." You told her after finishing with her eye. " Sounds good ? "

" Absolutely, thank you. I'll call Toby first though. "

You tensed immediately, which didn't go unnoticed. You were good at hiding your feelings but not from Kate.

She always seemed to figure out everything (your love for her being the exception).

" What's wrong ? " She asked, looking at you with questioning eyes. " Did you do something ? And please, don't lie to me. "

" Well I..." You awkwardly scratched the back of your neck. " May or may not have left yesterday night to have a conversation with him. A conversation that left him in no state to talk to you right now."

" I'm sorry, you did what ? " Kate seemed so angry you backed off against the wall. " How dared you...Don't tell me you killed him ! "

" I did not." You knew it was a really lame excuse but it was only the truth. " I really really wanted to but I figured you woudn't be so happy with it so...I simply broke both of his legs. Oh and his left arm as well. "

" Why ?? Y/n, why did you do this !?? "

" Well I... I wanted to make sure Toby wouldn't ever lay a finger on you again. I think he understood the message."

Kate gave you an angry/disappointed look and sat on the couch, refusing to reply.

" What was I supposed to do
huh ? " You screamed, tears stinging in your eyes. " Letting you go back to your abusive boyfriend and just wait for him to kill you ? "

" I could have handled it myself Y/n ! I'm a grown woman and I'm perfectly capable of dealing with my own problems ! "

" I know you are. " You tried to calm her. " But sometimes, when you're in love with someone, you fail to consider them as a problem. You were about to go back to him weren't you ? "

Your bestfriend avoided your gaze and you understood the answer was yes.

" Toby loves me." She finally whispered. " He really does. He promised me he would try to be better so that we could have a future together."

" Right. And was that before or after getting you a black eye ? "

" Why are you acting like this is all my fault ? " Kate screamed again. " You know what ? I'm going to the hospital. Toby definitely needs me. "

" Please don't. Please don't." Your voice cracked despise yourself. " I can only protect you from him if you're willing to let me ! "

" And what if I'm not ? "

" Then he'll kill you sooner or later."

You tried sounding casual but failed miserably are more tears started escaping your eyes.

" This is my life and I'm the only one who gets to decide what to do with it ! " Kate screamed again. " Why do you care so much anyway ? "

" Because I'm in love with you !"

You put a hand in front of your mouth, refusing to believe you had just confessed your love to Kate.

The brunette just stared at you without saying a word. Then her eyes soften and she went closer to you.

" I think I have feelings for you too " She finally admitted. " I refused to see it for a very long time but that would explain a lot of things. "

" Like ? "

" Like why Toby got so mad yesterday when he saw I was about to text you again. I think he knew there was more than friendship going on between us "

" So I'm the reason he hit you ?"

" Hey." Kate wrapped her arms around you. " Stop feeling guilty about everything okay ? You're not responsible for my crazy ex-boyfriend's actions."

You nodded and just stared at her, unsure of what you should do.

Of course, you wanted nothing more than kissing Kate but she had just got out of a two years abusive relationship, there was no need to rush things.

You just closed your eyes, holding the brunette close to you before kissing the top of her head.

" Is it okay if...you know if we take it a bit slow ? " Kate asked with a small voice. " Toby is all I have ever known and I don't think I'm ready to start something with you just yet..."

" I've been waiting since the day we met, Katie. " You held her tigher. " I can keep on waiting for as long as you need. We have all the time in the world. "

She nodded gratefully against your chest and you smiled despite yourself.

Kate wasn't yours just yet but she would be one day and it was enough for you.

" Kate ? "

" Yes ? "

" Would you still have feelings for me if I told you that Toby isn't in the hospital but buried in the forest ? "
