Your mission with Yelena was over and you were about to, finally, come home to your                        best friend. It had been a long and challenging week. You were tired, sore and frustrated because nothing had happened between you and your sexy partner.

You really had tried to create the perfect occasion but Yelena wasn't...receptive. Or at least, that's what you thought but something really weird had happened the night before and now you weren't sure about anything anymore.

It was only a few words, the blonde wasn't much of a talker but it had been enough to leave you confused and unsettled.

You were in the middle of yet another awkward attempt to flirt with her. She usually ignored you or replied with a snarky comment but not this time. She had juste stared at you with something...different in her eyes before asking bluntly:

"What if I say yes Y/N? What then? We go out together? Please, ask yourself, is that really what you want?"

You had remained quiet, unable to get the right words out of your month for a reason you still couldn't identify. Yelena had then walked away after giving you her "I told you so" look, leaving you utterly confused.

Surely, you were just a coward and had been intimidated by the blonde's unexpected behavior. Right? Right??

"Y/N whatever you're thinking of, snap out of it." Your partner interrupted your rumination, her voice immediately telling you something was wrong. "I just had Clint, we have an emergency."

"An emergency? What kind of emergen-..."

"Something unexpected happened. He's outnumbered and he needs backup, now."

Clint needed back up? Shit he usually never asked for help, the situation had to be very bad.

You had many questions but understood that you didn't have time to ask them. Hawkeye was in danger and you couldn't imagine how your best friend would react if anything happened to him. He was a role model to her but in many ways, he was also her dad.

Kate couldn't lose another father figure, it would destroy her.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About an hour later, you arrived near Clint's position. You and Yelena quickly grabbed your weapons and left the jet, following the gunshots that could be heard.

You were still pretty far away, not close enough to have a clear understanding of whatever was happening, when a scream made you freeze for a second. This voice...it defnitely looked like Hawkeye except the Avenger never showed weakness when he was hurt.

It had almost gotten him killed many times but that's just how he was and there was no changing it. The only time you had seen Clint look genuiely upset during a fight was when...

"Kate". You whispered to yourself, suddenly feeling very sick. "Kaaaaaate".

You started running, yelling your bestfriend's name. If you were still trying to convince yourself that it was just a huge misunderstanding, deep down you knew. You felt it in your bones. Kate was hurt and it was your fault.

The first thing you noticed upon arriving in the battlefield were the bodies. They were scattered everywhere, at least 10 of them. You had seen that before and it could only mean two things: 1) A Widow had been there 2) Someone had been desperate enough for their strenght to be demultiplied.

They had all clearly been taken out by an arrow, which made you run even faster.

"Y/N!" Your favorite voice called for you and immediately, your whole body relaxed. "You're here"

You spotted Kate not too far from you, a weak grin illuminating her face. Clint was supporting her and she seemed exhausted but she was alive. For a second, you thought you had lost her but she was alive.

Fresh tears you didn't even know you had been holding back rolled on your cheeks and a sob escaped your mouth.  Yelena, who had been right before you, squeezed your shoulder with an encouraging grin.

"She's alright Y/N. Go to her."

And you did. You ran like you had never run before. You ran like you had just almost lost the most important person in your life. Maybe because in the end, that's exactly who Kate was.

She let go of Clint and you scooped her up, her nose a few inches away from yours.

"I thought I lost you Kit-Kat." Your voice quivered "I thought...I don't know I..."

"Shhh, it's okay, we're okay."

The brunette hugged you tighter, stroking your hair gently and you felt yourself breaking down against her. You didn't care that Yelena and Clint were watching with concerned faces or that you and Kate were now in a very ambiguous position.

She was warm, and she smelled like strawberry, fresh soap and...home. That's it, she smelt like home.

"I got knocked out by one of the guys we were fighting and Clint, being the drama queen that he is, kinda thought that I was dead." Kate explained with a giggle when you finally released her. "Always such a dad huh?"

"You still need to get that head checked smart-ass." The older guy huffed, smiling despite himself. "You did lose consciousness for some time."

She shrugged, clearly dismissing his worries and he made a face. Yup, those two really acted like father and daughter and it was freaking adorable. Why hadn't you ever noticed just how adorable it was?

They kept on bickering until Kate finally promised to go see Bruce and you all made your way back to the jet.

Clint and Yelena claimed that two people were absolutely needed to drive and both sat at the front, which left you and Kate alone in the back.

She settled against you, her head on your lap and your hands in her hair. This was completely new to you. The closeness, sure, but more importantly the warm feeling that came with it.

You craved her presence, her touch, and you couldn't believe you had never realized it before. Gosh you had almost lost her and you could have missed out on all of this, running after people who just weren't who you were trully looking for.

You wanted to tell Kate you were sorry, tell her you loved her (because yes, that's what it was you understood it now finally), tell her all the things you had been too blind to get out of your mouth before.

"Y/N I can litterally hear your brain roasting you from here." Kate whispered softly, her words barely audible as she was already half asleep. "Don't be too hard on yourself and get some rest. We can talk about it later, we have time."

She relaxed in your arms and you decided to close your eyes as well. You WOULD talk to her at some point but for now, she was right. You had all the time in the world.

You woke up with a gasp, a strong feeling of anxiety constraining your chest. You couldn't tell what but somethig was wrong.

Breathing deeply, you looked at Kate for comfort. She was still nuzzled against your chest, her dark locks brushing against your arm and you couldn't help but smile at how adorable she looked.

However, that grin quickly vanished when you realized the brunette's skin was about 3 shades lighter than it should have been. She was white as a ghost and a trail of blood was running from her nose.

"Okay Kit-Kat, time to wake up." You shook her gently, trying not to show just how panicked you were. "We need to get your head checked, open your eyes please."

Kate didn't stir, even after you switched from soft nudges to much stronger shakes.

"Kate, come on!" You were fully crying at this point. "Clint, Yelena, help! I need help".
