It was around four in the afternoon when we began to close up shop, because we knew no one else would buy anything now, and we always were open to having letters posted so people could ask for things when we weren't there. I made my way upstairs, wanting to spend some time on my own before we had dinner. I picked up the vase holding the single primrose. The water was really high in the vase, probably to compensate for the short stem of the flower. I didn't know why he didn't just pick a shorter vase, but Camilo's craziness was what made me love him. The air was a lot cooler now, and I thought it would be best to put the flower back out onto the window sill. The sky was still pretty light, and I didn't need a candle to see yet, so I pulled up a chair to the window, grabbed a book and began to read. The warm air mixed with a light breeze was perfect, giving everything a calmer atmosphere than it would normally have. I read for about twenty minutes, taking my time to savour the moment before I would have to eat. My father called me down to eat, and I left my room to go eat with them.
I was quite tired when we ate, zoning in and out of conversations, probably from staying up late and the nightmare I had. I hadn't thought about it all day, but now that I thought about it, something hit me. What happened there, it was exactly what Mirabel had told us that would happen. Cracks in the Madrigal home, destruction everywhere. My father picked up on my confused and worried expression, asking if I was alright, to which I responded yes in a weak tone. I was brought out of a daze by the sounds of water hitting the ground again and again. The three of us looked up to see out of the window, where we saw rain beginning to fall, growing more powerful and stormy by the second. "That's odd. Señora Pepa normally is the cause of a beautiful, clear sky, especially on a day with a special event like this. I wonder what has upset her?" My mother questioned, me and my father responding with a slight nod. I knew Isabela didn't really want to marry Mariano, but she would go through it for the family, so what was going wrong right now?
"Didn't some people from the town say they were going up there soon to give congratulations? Am I allowed to go?" I asked, hoping that they would say yes so I would know what was going on. "Yes, you can. But if the rain gets worse, make sure to come straight home" my father said, taking both his and my plates to be washed. I quickly went to my room to grab a pair of shoes, then ran out of the house and up to La Casa Madrigal. The rain was unpredictable at this point, stopping and starting all of the time as I ran. When I got there, I saw many people stood outside waiting for their cue to give congratulations to the soon to be married couple. "Are you friends with one of them?" A woman stood there asked me. "I'm a friend of Isabela's" I replied, wanting to know what was going on inside. Everyone was talking amongst themselves, just waiting for the door to open. As I was there on my own, I didn't have anyone to talk to, so instead I just listened to the sounds coming from inside the house. Nobody else noticed, but yelling was heard from inside the house, though it was quite quiet. I knew this wasn't good. There was never yelling in there, they were careful so they didn't hurt Dolores' ears that much. This wasn't good.
We all stood there in silence after a while, everyone guessing that soon they were going to come outside. The door then swung open, everyone yelling 'Felicidades' with excitement and joy, though quickly being silenced by the chaos ensuing inside the house. A storm cloud was raining on everything and everyone, plants growing everywhere, and cracks. Lots of cracks. On the walls, the ceiling, the floor, everywhere. It was chaos. I looked to Camilo, who was staring at me in fear. I wasn't surprised, his house, his whole life, was crumbling around him. Most people around me began to walk back down to the town to give the family space, but also to get away from the chaos that they seemed scared of. I didn't leave, and when Camilo noticed, he rushed out of the house, grabbing me by the wrist and pulling me down towards the river.
