The two of us parted ways after that, going to work on separate parts of the house so that we wouldn't get distracted and get no work done. It was late in the evening when everything was finished, but it was done much faster than I expected. I guess that's what happens when the whole town bands together and has a common goal. The last thing to be done was adding the doorknob to the front of the house, and the rest of the Madrigals let it be Mirabel who put it in. We all waited a minute, then we saw the beautiful lights growing from where the doorknob was placed. It glowed like it did when Antonio placed his hand on the doorknob. The lights spread all around Casita, then travelled past our feet and through the town. Then, the house came alive again, ceiling tiles moving in unison, and Mirabel talking to the house as if she understood it.
Then, the stones beneath our feet began to move again, pulling all of us closer to the house, then pulling us inside. Almost all of the town was pulled in, making it look like a gift ceremony again. Everyone was scattered around the place, but I did notice a few. Isabela was in the far corner, growing plants around her and using them to dye her dress a vibrant blue along with yellows and greens. Luisa was thrown into a hammock under one of the overhangs of the house and seemed to be relaxing for once. Then it began to hail softly, small pieces of ice falling down onto my head gently, and their source was Señora Pepa dancing under a hailing cloud.
"It looks a lot better now doesn't it?" I heard being asked from behind me. I turned around to see Mirabel standing behind me, a smile on her face as she looked at her family happy. "It does. I'm glad things have changed a bit, everyone seems happier and more like themselves now" I told her, and her smile grew bigger. "Have you seen Camilo?" I asked her, and she looked around quickly. "I haven't, why? Did you want to do something with him?" She asked, her innocent smile growing into a devious smirk. " Yeah yeah, I'm going to do the deed with him, Mirabel. I just want to know where he is" I told her sarcastically. "Well then, maybe you shouldn't be so easy to deceive and you would know where he is" she told me, then her body contorted quickly and changed back into the chameleon that I knew.
"That's not fair, you've known Mirabel your whole life, of course you'd make me believe it was her" I complained, to which he responded with a laugh and pulled me in for a hug. "I missed you" he confessed, holding me tightly and placing a soft kiss on my forehead. "It's only been a few hours Camilo, you can't have missed me that much" I told him, but didn't complain about the hug nor the kiss, and pulled him tighter to me. "Hours, days, weeks, it doesn't matter. I missed you" he told me.
We were there for only a minute before Casita began pulling us away from each other by moving the tiles beneath our feet. "Hey, what's your deal!" he exclaimed at the house, the tiles moving in a sad formation while he glared at them, causing me to laugh. He looked at me with an apologetic look but was then pulled away by the house.
"He's cute isn't he" I heard from behind me. I turned around to see a girl around my age, dark hair in perfect curls, smooth skin and a perfect flowing dress. It was as though she was a mix between Isabela and Mirabel, though her attitude and voice were very different. "He is," I responded, not thinking much about the comment at that moment. "I wonder if he has a girlfriend," she said, making my head spin around to look at me. "What?" I asked, raising my voice slightly when I heard her say that. "I'm sure he doesn't. The only person in the town that would ever be up to his standards would be his own family, and maybe me" she said, cockiness in every word she said. It touched a nerve, but I didn't say anything. It was just a normal girl with a crush, nothing more.
"You're his friend right, he's out of your league sure, but you're friends. Could you introduce me to him?" She asked, making my head throb with every word she said. Out of his league? Right, at least I didn't treat him like a statue who didn't have any feelings, or like an idol that I had a crush on. "Uh, I'll mention you to him, but I can't promise anything" I told her, and her face lit up with excitement, although I noticed that she was looking behind me.
"Are you ok?" Camilo asked from behind me, and she pushed me to the side to talk to him. "I'm alright, how are you. I'm Maria by the way" she exclaimed, although her words sounded like poison to me as she spoke. "I was actually speaking to them, sorry" he said, signalling to me. "Oh, of course, your friend and I were talking about you. Would you like to go get something to drink" she told him, pulling him by the arm and away from me. I won't lie, I was jealous, but he immediately pulled his arm away, struggling a little because he wasn't the strongest of people. "No thank you actually, I'm going to spend time with my partner" he said, emphasising the last word so she knew I wasn't just his friend. She looked at me, facing at an angle where he couldn't see her face properly, and gave me a sour look. She reluctantly let go of his arm then walked away from the two of us.
We quickly lost her in the crowd, but after a moment the two of us started laughing. "Didn't know I was that likeable in the town" Camilo laughed. "Don't say that, if you weren't likeable I wouldn't be here right now would I?" I asked, quickly being pulled into his chest. "I guess not, why didn't you say anything though, you looked angry" he said in a joking tone. "I was too stunned to speak if I'm being honest. I thought it was obvious that we were a thing, but I guess some people are too dense to realise" I said, hugging him tighter at the thought of that girl trying to take him away.
"Hey, do you want to go up to my room for a bit? I was thinking I could get some paints and brushes and do another family mural on the side of the house. It'd match the one in town" He said, and I quickly nodded in response. He held onto my hand so we wouldn't lose each other, then pulled me towards the doors upstairs. They all looked as they did when the members of the family hadn't gotten their gift yet, but when he touched the handle of his door, the door lit up and the image that had been on there before returned. He pulled me inside and quickly shut the door behind him. When the door was closed and the sounds outside had been drowned out a bit, I quickly asked him a question. "You were the one who painted the mural in town? It looks like a different painting style than everything else I've seen painted by you". "Oh, yeah. I was trying something different for once, and I thought that sort of style would be cool, especially for the children of the town to see, it's a lot more fun" he said, and I nodded in agreement.
The walls in the room then changed to a mix of orange and purple, then a small amount of red being mixed in as well. He then stood up and walked over to me, pinned me against the wall and pulled me into a deep kiss. The two of us were there for a few minutes, me pinned against the wall and him holding me there. After a few minutes he pulled away for air, and I quickly got a question in. "Purple, orange and a bit of red is for jealousy right?" I asked, and he responded quickly with "You catch on fast".
After about an hour together he picked up his painting supplies and we both went back out. It was still busy, but the crowd had thinned out a bit and you could find your way through it easily. He brought me to the side of the house, the setting sun making the light yellow wall look golden. "Let's do this together, shall we?"
