Hello all!

To apologize for not posting last weekend, here's a ridiculously long chapter for you. It technically could have been split into three chapters, it's so long 😅 I hope you enjoy it!

Fuck. I could just take the afternoon off. It wouldn't even be a big deal. Levi probably wouldn't notice.

Y/N stared at the horse in front her. In her entire 24 years, she had never had a reason to ride a horse, and she would've continued on that way if it weren't for this job. However, the crop of trees where Levi trained Scouts with ODM gear was a fifteen-minute horse ride from headquarters, so she didn't have a choice. Last time they went, Y/N rode her horse without protest because she didn't want to admit that she only had a vague idea of what she was doing. If anyone asked, Y/N would argue that she did fairly well all things considered, but she definitely wouldn't admit how scared she had been.

"Y/N," a voice called her name.

She turned around to see Luka walking down the stables towards her. He was tall and his muscles were prominent under his just-barely-too-tight button up shirt. His green eyes were set into a conventionally handsome face, and his light brown hair was pushed back. He had been nothing but friendly since they met, if not a little flirty and suggestive. But Y/N couldn't shake the feeling that he seemed a bit bland.

"Oh hi, Luka," Y/N greeted him.

Luka was one of the first people to introduce himself out of the Scouts that Levi had been training. He was always quick to chat her up during his down time, even if it earned him harsh criticism from Captain Levi.

"I still can't believe you're scared of horses. I never would've guessed," Luka patted the horse's neck when he approached.

Y/N rolled her eyes. "I'm not scared. I just don't want to put my life in the hooves of a giant beast."

Luka chuckled. "You're coming with us again today?"

Y/N nodded her head and continued staring down the aforementioned 'beast.' I shouldn't have complained to Luka. I rode just fine; no one would've noticed if I hadn't said something.

"You can ride with me if you want. It's not very far." Luka's smile was his best feature. It was earnest and comforting.

What does he remind me of? Y/N wondered and looked around the barn. Part of her was hoping Levi would show up and make the same offer. Sadly, he was nowhere in sight.

"That'd be great."

"Let's go, everyone. Pick up the pace," Levi yelled.

His eyes scanned the group of thirteen Scouts (plus Y/N) as they filed out of the stables.

Where is Y/N? I wonder if she'll be as scared this time.

Just as the thought crossed his mind, she stepped out of the stables alongside Luka and his horse. Levi scowled.

I should've known Luka would be within three steps of Y/N.

Levi watched as Y/N got on the horse and Luka followed close after her.

She can ride with whoever she wants. It's none of my business.

Luka reached around Y/N's sides to grab the reins. When he smiled down at Y/N, Levi turned his horse and nudged it forward, not bothering to wait for the other Scouts.

I don't care who she rides with. It's none of my business, he repeated to himself a few times.

He followed the path away from Headquarters, and by the time it opened up into a field, the Scouts he had left behind caught up. His peripheral vision was filled with Scouts on horseback, but he didn't see Y/N.
