“The family is one of nature’s masterpieces.” George Santayana
You know that feeling that you get when you know that technically, what you see isn’t real, but at the same time it feels like you’re really standing there? That’s what I’m experiencing right now. Although the man in front of me is real and I did the one thing that I thought would put my restless conscious at ease.
Walking towards the man who seemed to regard me in a calm and collected manner, I made it so I was close enough that if I took one more step I’d bump into him. I fidgeted with my hands in front of me before quickly lifting one of them and slapping the man – or Loki as he had introduced himself – across the cheek. A loud Crack sounded as skin came in contact with skin.
I pulled my hand away and covered my mouth as I stared at him. His cheek was bright red with a slight impression of my hand and my hand was ringing from the force of my slap. He’s real! My god he’s real! I turn quickly and run my hands through my hair, successfully ignoring Loki. “How? You… I’m dreaming… Right? I shouldn’t be able to feel pain in a dream!” I scream looking back towards Loki.
“You are dreaming Svala-”
“My name is Andrea! And you’re that… that psycho who Thor told us about.” He raised a manicured eyebrow at me.
“Thor… Odinson?” I was confused. Is that Thor’s last name?
“I-I don’t know… He speaks real proper like and he wears a lot of met- How am able to fuckin’ see you!?” I was hyperventilating at best. For someone who had been blind for as long as they can remember, I have my rights to be freaked out. Come on, who wouldn’t be?
“A combination of magic and willpower.”
“Willpower? You mean I could have just wanted to see really badly and I wouldn’t be blind?”
“Umm, no. The magic is what grants your sight, your willpower is what allows you to believe it.”
“You’re insane. I’m stranded on the top of a snow-capped mountain with some freakin’ moron who doesn’t even call me by my proper name!” I let out a frustrated cry before pacing a few meters from Loki.
“Do you know what you name means?”
“Andrea means ‘Courageous’ in Greek. Svala means ‘Swallow’ in Norse. I’m not stupid.”
“But you are blind.” That was a low blow.
“Didn’t we establish this? Yes I’m blind, but whenever I see you I actually SEE you, in High Def and everything!” I scream, trying to refrain from killing him. He was getting on my last nerve. He didn’t seem to be too worried about that though. He was so calm, I almost wondered if this is actually happening.
“I am real, believe me when I say that Svala. I’ve been searching a long time for you.”
“What so you can marry me?” I snap and for the first time since we started talking, he actually looked appalled by that concept. Well, at least we think the same thing when it comes to that. “And why do you keep calling me Svala?” He looked around our surroundings like he expecting someone to jump out at any given moment.
“I can’t explain right now. Soon. Very soon.” Before I could respond the image faded until I was greeted by the darkness I so long ago came to terms with.
I sigh and sit up. My hands are fidgeting on my lap and Rex is breathing so heavy that it sounds like some asthmatic is in my room instead. “Geez Rex. You’re sounding a bit worn out.” I don’t use him that much do I?
