Lindsay came home from supper with Sara just shortly after six, later than she was hoping for but considering the topic it was understandable. Lindsay opened up her computer and started searching for articles about the missing girl.
From what Lindsay could read the press knew even less then the police did, Lindsay turned to Bubbie and asked the obvious question "How is it that no one saw anything?"
In a world of doorbell cameras and cell phones and everyone watching everything did no one notice anything, Lindsay was focused on that thought when Bubbie spoke up "just because no one living saw anything, doesn't mean they're aren't eyes everywhere." Lindsay knew what he meant, and had to agree.
"So what time should we head out tonight" Lindsay asked to Bubbie, " We aren't heading out anywhere kiddo, I'm doing this by myself and you can stay here and work on your computer top" explained Bubbie. Lindsay looked at him incredulously "Are you fucking kidding right now, you really think I'm going to stay home, guess again shithead, and don't call me kiddo.
I outrank you in physical age, just because you've been dead for the last 50 years does not make you older!" Bubbie knew better than to argue with Lindsay when she was this fired up, ok he thought, away we go.
Lindsay drove to the recently built subdivision and started cruising the streets unknowingly tracing the path that the green van took a day earlier. She found it creepy that all the streets basically look the same with the same cookie cutter houses, a little too boring for for Lindsay's taste that's for sure but she could see the appeal to a nice family, with two small girls, trying to start a new life.
She was lost in this thought when Bubbie floated up to her and told her to slow down. "This is their house" he whispered in Lindsay's ear. "Bubbie, why are you whispering when you know I'm the only one who can hear you?" asked Lindsay. "Just trying to keep it spooky, seemed like a whispering moment to me" replied Bubbie.
Lindsay rolled her eyes and studied the house, she didn't see Andrew's car which means he must have left already, she started to drive away when she felt it, another presence had appeared. Lindsay always knew when an astral projection was making an appearance, her stomach would flutter and she would get chills despite being warm.
She watched as the new presence floated over towards her car, and could hear a soft voice grumbling and cursing someone or something, when it stopped floating in front of her car Lindsay leaned out the window and told the spirit that she could hear them and if they wanted to speak she would listen. The spirit floated up to Bubbie and seem to pulse rapidly in front of him, which in turn made Bubbie pulse just as fast.
Ok, Lindsay thought, I'm going to say this new spirit is a female and I may vomit, she turned to the the two spirits who were pulsing in front of each other faster and faster "enough with the spirit love in, we got work to do" she snapped at both of them. Both shimmers floated over to Lindsay, the new spirit said in a purring voice "what's your rush sugar, there's always time for a little fun".
Bubbie pulsed excitedly and said "ya, come on Lindsay, we haven't found anything and it's getting late, I'd be happy to make sure this lovely shimmer gets to where she needs to go". Lindsay though to herself, she's a fucking spirit, she goes wherever she wants, so why was she hanging around this neighborhood.
Lindsay asked the spirit if she had seen anything suspicious in the last 24 hours such as, someone driving slowly around the streets, she also asked if she had seen the twin girls who live in the house they were watching. Lindsay felt a twinge of disappointment when the spirit told her she hadn't seen anything like that, and that she spends most of her time in the half built house at the end of the street. Lindsay asked in a curious tone "why hang out there when you can go anywhere"?
The spirit replied in a matter of fact voice "cause that's where I died and that's where I feel the most connected to life, don't ask why, it just where I belong". Lindsay was on the verge of asking how she died, but thought better of it, she didn't want to offend her in case they needed her help again and spirits can be somewhat touchy when it comes to talking about their deaths.
Lindsay couldn't blame them, probably not the happiest memory. After thanking the spirit and asking her to keep an eye out for anything suspicious they headed back to Lindsay's.
Disappointed and with no more answers then when they started. Lindsay thought about calling Andrew to see if he had any information from his evening with the parents but when she realized it was almost 11:00 she thought better of it, he had Sunday sermon to give and knew he would want to be well rested and ready to give his all for his congregation and religion.
Lindsay decided that it was enough for tonight and decided to head to bed, maybe a good nights rest will help she thought as she slid off her pants and crawled into bed and fell asleep instantly.
Lindsay adjusted her eyes to the shadows of the cemetery, it was almost a full moon but there were shadows everywhere, she jumped when she felt someone grab her hand "Jesus Andrew you scared the shit out of me" it was crazy enough they both had to sneak out of their house to do this was dangerous but to do this on a school night was dangerous and crazy.
Lindsay and Andrew walked hand in hand through the decaying gravestones and the soft grass of the recently departed until they saw what they were looking for. A small gravestone that had been there for centuries, the writing was faded and the dates obscured by moss and mold but they knew this was the final resting place of Madeline Matthews.
Madeline Matthews was a known witch, some say she cursed this town to never have another bountiful fishing season and for the town to never prosper and some say she was protecting the town from the outsiders who would exploit the fishing and ruin their home, no matter what side they were on she still died by fire.
Lindsay opened the backpack she was carrying and took out the three black candles she brought with her, she placed them in a triangle in front of the small gravestone, as she braced herself she felt the familiar breeze and saw Bubbie float up to her "be careful he warned and continued "spirits who are resting do not like to be disturbed and they're can be consequences for the one who disturbs them, severe consequences" he finished.
Lindsay lit all the candles and motioned for Andrew to sit down beside her, Andrew hesitantly sat down and stared at Lindsay, "Linds are you sure we should do this" he asked in a quiet tone "maybe we shouldn't be messing around with this, seems kind of dangerous or unholy".
Lindsay patted Andrew's hand and said in her best reassuring voice "We aren't doing anything Andrew, I am going to try and channel her spirit and you are here as a witness, I don't want you involved in any other way, no matter what happens".
Bubbie floated up to her again and said in a cautious tone "think about this kiddo, its one thing to talk to me or and the others but ti bring a spirit forth is something completely different and dangerous".
Lindsay turned to the shimmering pulse smiled and said "that's why I have you Bubbie, you will protect me, you have no choice". Damn her thought Bubbie, why couldn't I have been attached to a boy instead of this tenacious little girl. Lindsay started speaking in a low tone to the gravestone glowing in the candlelight "Madeline Matthews, I summon you to come forward and speak through me, you feel my presence and know my ability, I feel your spirit around me and welcome you, come forth and use my voice as your own".
Lindsay and Andrew both held their breath and waited and waited and waited. Suddenly Lindsay felt a coldness insider her she didn't know could exist and started to tremble.
The alarm went off blaring and intrusive, Lindsay looked at her phone and groaned when she saw the time, it was only 8:00 how the hell did her alarm go off when she didn't even set it, she silenced the nasty beast with a swat of her hand and gave a big stretch contemplating how her alarm got turned on when she noticed the shimmer floating at the end of her bed. "Bubbie your a dick" exclaimed Lindsay and she swung off her covers and stood up,
Bubbie floated out of the room in a hurry and said "Good lord girl, put some pants on". Lindsay flipped him the middle finger and reached for yesterday's joggers, she picked them up, smelled them, shrugged her shoulders, and put them on.
