Lindsay got home from her surprise dinner with Oliver smiling and feeling really good, as good as she felt after the dream she had about Oliver's talented tongue.
She looked at her phone to see the time and groaned the word fuck, her phone was dead, she forgot to charge it, no wonder she hadn't heard from Sara. She sat on her bed and plugged the phone in to charge, as she impatiently waited for home screen to show up Bubbie floated up to her. "Are you seriously going to meet this clown again" he said in exasperated tone.
Lindsay turned to Bubbie and replied "yes I am Bubbie, I kinda like him and would get to know him better, you may not need the physical touch anymore but I do, I love having you around and Sara and Andrew but what's wrong with meeting new people".
Bubbie floated to the end of Lindsay's bed "Look kiddo" he started "how do you explain to new people about your ability and the fact that it often affects your life and anyone involved with you, not to mention the fact that you have a spirit who is attached to you, forever" he concluded.
Lindsay was about to explain more of her point when her phone started buzzing and chiming, she looked over she had missed 3 texts and a message from Sara, she hit her voicemail and heard Sara's message.
Hey Lindsay, sent you a couple of texts, need to see you tomorrow if possible, can I come by your place, also can you call Andrew, call me when you get this. Lindsay looked at the clock it was 11:00, too late tonight, first thing tomorrow she will call. Lindsay changed into her pyjama bottoms and crawled into bed.
She found herself walking in the cemetery along the same path her and Andrew had travelled years ago, she felt the crisp grass under her feet, she could smell the it was the early morning and the hour where everyone was asleep. She walked along the rows of decayed gravestones until she stopped at the grave of Madeline Matthews, she kneeled down in front of it, touched it gently and pulled her hand away quickly.
She looked at the hand that touched the grave with fear, thick black blood was making its way down her fingers and towards her wrist. She shook her hand hard trying to get it off and tried to wipe her hand on the grass but the grass just tore at her skin, shredding bits of flesh off her fingers and wrists, she yanked her hand back and clutched it to her chest, she looked back to the gravestone and let out a silent scream when she saw the message, COMING FOR YOU printed in the same thick black blood that coated her hand.
Lindsay woke up screaming, Bubbie was floating above her bed "Your ok kiddo, it was just a dream, your safe" he said in a soothing tone, it was the same tone he always used when Lindsay had bad dreams even when she was a child.
Lindsay sat up shaking, and looked at her hand, it was the same as it always was, no torn flesh or thick black blood. She looked over to where Bubbie was floating and said in a quiet tone "Madeline Matthews is gone right"?
Lindsay noticed Bubbie's shimmer dull slightly, she was just about to push the issue farther when her phone rang Lindsay picked it up "Hey Sara" she said. "Hey Linds" Sara replied and continued "are you ok, cause you don't sound ok".
Lindsay explained that she was fine, just shaking off a rough sleep, Sara apologized for calling so early and for what she was about to do. "What are you going to do"? Lindsay asked in a panicked voice, suddenly she heard a knock at her door.
Lindsay jumped up with Bubbie floating behind her, she opened the door to find Sara standing there with 3 coffees from the Restaurant.
Lindsay couldn't help but smile, Sara had that affect on her she was one of her best friend and the only other girl she could talk openly with. "Sorry but I really need to pull this case together, I have a few leads and I need Andrew's expertise,
I called him on my way over and he should be here any time" she explained as she walked into to Lindsay place and set the coffee on her small kitchen table.
They both sat down and took one, Sara looked at Lindsay with a smirk on her face and asked "So just out of curiosity, how come you didn't answer any of my texts or return my call, you always have your phone with you"? Lindsay could feel her face go red, curse of the fair skinned she thought. Sara's eyes widened and her smile got bigger "spill" she demanded.
Lindsay told her of the fake text from Mark and the the dinner with Oliver, Sara commented that if he went through all that trouble he was at least worth having a meal with."My thoughts exactly" said Lindsay as she looked at Bubbie.
Lindsay confided in Sara that she thought she fucked it up when Bubbie distracted her by his rambling but was pleasantly surprised when he invited her for a dessert date and kissed her. Sara smiled and said "I'll bet he wants to eat pie for dessert".
A knock at the door ended the conversation, Sara got up and let Andrew in, he sat down at the table and Lindsay handed him his coffee, he looked at his two friends who were smiling like they shared an inside joke "Ladies" he asked and continued "not that I don't love to see you guys smile but I feel I'm missing something here".
Lindsay told Andrew about the dinner with Oliver and Bubbies distraction but that Oliver invited her for a dessert date and even gave her a kiss. Andrew looked at Lindsay with an amused look on his face and asked "Isn't that the spy guy"?
Sara apologized for interrupting but she needed to know what Lindsay found out in the woods, Lindsay explained about the first spirit they met and how he wasn't entirely helpful. Andrew's face went white, "he-he threw you" stammered Andrew.
Lindsay explained it was like she just flew backwards in the air, Andrew shuddered inwardly remembering the Lindsay creature flying back, Lindsay reached over and took Andrew's hand, colour began to fill his face again.
Lindsay explained about Alex Duncan and how she was so sure he was just a lost little shimmer, both Andrew and Sara's mouth dropped open when she told them about his horrific crime and his equally horrific death.
Lindsay explained that the last spirit they talked to actually something interesting to say, she talked about how the spirit was disturbed by headlights for the past two nights and how the female spirit they met the other day saw a van, she concluded with maybe there was something to the old farmhouse.
Sara told Andrew about meeting Father Thomas McGuinn at the Millers Point Parrish, he said that the records of congregation members for back then had burned up in a fire that ran through the church seven years ago, the old heater they never replace had been leaking gas and the electrical system was not up to code.
On a stormy night and with one bolt of lightening, the fire burned through over half of the church, the heavy rains and hard work of the fire department managed to save the main part of the church but the basement and living quarters were beyond repair.
Sara explained that she did learn that all the records had been moved to a computer database that could be accessed by any priest in surrounding areas.
Andrew agreed right away to use his credentials and get registered for the site so he can have access to the Parrish records. Sara asked Lindsay if her and Bubbie would come with her to check out the farmhouse, Lindsay agreed they would when her phone chimed, she looked at the text it read, dessert tonight, my place.
Lindsay smiled at the text felt her face go red, she looked up to see Andrew and Sara staring at her with amused looks on their faces. "Oh shut up" Lindsay said with a big grin on her face.
