It was the beginning of seventh year and I was so happy to be back with Sirius. We had gotten together in the middle of sixth year, but because my family and I went travelling over the summer holidays I couldn't see him for two whole months. Now though we were going to make up for lost time.
We sat together on the train ride back up to school, as well as next to each other at the start-of-term feast and in the common room where we spent a while cuddling on the sofa in front of the fireplace. "I can't believe it's our last year," I mumbled, feeling a little sad.
"We'll make the most of it," Sirius said, pressing his lips against my temple. I nodded with a smile, wanting to make as many memories before we left however this year was going to be tough, what with our NEWTs approaching so I knew I'd be spending a lot of time studying, and I'd attempt to make Sirius do the same.
It was the first Defence Against the Dark Arts class of the year, and I sat at my desk with my best friend Mary. "Okay class, settle down," Professor Carlisle said as he walked down the stairs from his office. "Welcome to seventh year. Your NEWTs are fast approaching, so I expect all of you to knuckle down this year to try and get oustandings, or at least exceeds expectations. Some of this years content will be more advanced and intense than previous years, but I expect you to study it all. Now, we'll begin this term by learning about something we haven't yet touched upon: the unforgivable curses." I let out a small gasp at this, not expecting to learn about such spells. "Don't worry, we won't be practising them. They're all illegal after all, and the use of them will get you sent straight to Azkaban. So, who can tell me how many there are, and what each of them are?"
As the lesson went on I found myself grimacing, not enjoying this particular topic. It was dark and twisted, Carlisle saying we'd be spending the next few weeks discussing and studying their history and origins. The lesson seemed to drag as Carlisle described in painstaking detail the effects of the imperius curse. When it was finally over I packed up my things quickly and left the classroom, sighing in relief when I was out. "That was horrible," I said, Mary nodding beside me who looked pale. "Sirius," I called out to my boyfriend who was wearing a blank expression. "Are you okay?" I asked, cupping his cheek. He went slightly rigid but nodded, however I could tell he was not telling the truth. I didn't want to press on it however, so instead held his hand tightly and smiled up at him which seemed to soften his expression. "Come on, we have transfiguration to get to," I smiled, pecking his cheek.
"Sure, lets go."
Throughout the rest of the day his attitude picked up, and by the end of school he was back to his cheery self again.

We were a few weeks into the new school year, and we were still learning about the three unforgivable curses. Carlisle seemed to be enjoying teaching them which put me slightly on edge, and we'd moved on from the imperius curse to the cruciatus curse. During the first lesson of studying the horrible spell, most of the people in the class were having a hard time dealing with it, especially when Carlisle demonstrated the curse on a toad.
Often people felt uncomfortable after these lessons but they were all fine by the time next period came, however one person was not. I had noticed Sirius acting differently recently, and I was scared it was to do with these lessons. He'd been a lot quieter, a lot less troublesome and often kept his head down. I was the first to notice however his friends soon caught on. They told me they often found him sitting on his bed staring at the heater that stood in the middle of their room, and that he didn't seem interested in pulling pranks. Even McGonagall pulled us aside and asked if he was okay.
