I had what you would call a hopeless love life. I had feelings for a guy who was head over heels in love with another girl; the guy was James Potter and the girl was Lily Evans. He was never one for hiding away, and showed off his love for her through endless flirting but somehow she never seemed interested in him which astounded me - in my eyes he was perfect.

I sighed as I sat at my desk in potions, the only class where I actually sat next to James. It was the only real chance I got to speak with him, however I always got nervous and bottled myself up. "Hey (y/n), how are ya?" James asked as he sat down beside me, unloading his quill, ink and notebooks from his bag.

"I'm okay thank you-,"

"Hey Evans!" James interrupted, seemingly uninterested in me. "Looking good as always," he winked at her as she walked past our desk.

"Oh shut up Potter," she said but there was a blush on her cheeks. James smirked, apparently satisfied he was able to make her flustered.

"Sorry (y/n), what did you say?" He asked when he realised he'd interrupted me and I let out a small dejected sigh.

"Nothing."

"Alright class, settle down!" Slughorn called over to everyone before clapping his hands loudly and beginning the class. Throughout the class we studied the ingredients Slughorn had laid out on our desk, us having to group them together and figure out which potions they were for. We'd managed to pick out the ingredients for the polyjuice potion, asides from the DNA needed, and that was when I spotted a key ingredient.

"Pearl dust..." I muttered, looking at the powder.

"Huh?" James said.

"O-oh, pearl dust, it's used in a lot of love potions," I explained, pointing to the pearl coloured powder on a folded up piece of paper.

"So maybe some of these make up a love potion?" James suggested and I nodded.

"I'd say it'd most likely be amortentia, I mean we're supposed to be studying it at some point this year," I said and he nodded. We picked out various ingredients from those laid out on the table until we believed we had the make up of amortentia.

"It's meant to be the strongest love potion in the world isn't it?" James asked and I nodded. "Maybe I could use some on Evans-,"

"Don't even joke about that!" I hit his arm, surprising both him and me. "It's a dangerous potion, a very dangerous potion. And besides wouldn't you... wouldn't you really want her to fall for you than have her love for you be fake?"

"Excellent point, duly noted," he said with a smirk. "So, what else have we got?"

We ended up categorising the ingredients into five different potions: amortentia, polyjuice potion, shrinking solution, draught of living death and felix felicis. As always the lesson went by too quickly, and Slughorn announced the end of class. "We'll be studying each of these potions in the upcoming weeks starting with amortentia, the love potion. Now then, off you pop, and I'll see some of you this evening!" Slughorn glanced at Lily, Snape and I.

"You're a member of the Slug Club? I didn't know that," James said and I sighed internally, having told him before.

"Yes I am," I said simply but I knew his attention was already on Lily. The worst part was I'd have to make small talk with her this evening as Slughorn was hosting a dinner for the club. I hurried out of the classroom after quickly muttering a goodbye to James and heading off to the common room as it was the last class of the day.
