Sirius stared at Ava.
"I- What?"
Ava looked at the bewildered look on his face. She laughed a little bit. "I never liked you romantically, Sirius."
"Then why- SO THE PAST THREE MONTHS HAVE BEEN A LIE, HAVE THEY?"
"No! No, I really do love you, but as a friend more than anything else. You see- My friend, Valerie, suggested that I give my crush a box of chocolates. And I did that, like the fucking idiot I am, and she wound up giving them to Ollie, who then passed them to you."
"That- doesn't explain anything."
"I didn't know it, but, oh my god, you're never going to forgive me- she spiked them. With Amortentia."
"What?"
"And so... You ate spiked chocolates that weren't meant for you, and when you asked me out back in December, I knew exactly what had happened. I confronted Valerie, she spilled, and... I said yes to you. I didn't know what else to do, so I said yes and we started dating, and you wanted Ollie the whole time, I could tell and-"
Sirius cut Ava off by giving her a warm, friendly hug. "I get it. You panicked."
"Yeah," Ava replied. "And after the effects wore off, I was pretty surprised you were still going out with me."
"I thought you really liked me. Me and Ollie went to Slughorn and he told us that it would probably wear off and then it did, and I stayed with you because I thought you just- really wanted me."
"But I'm a lesbian, so, I suppose not."
"Yeah, I guess not."
There was a mild silence when Sirius timidly said, "So... Who were you trying to get with?"
Ava snorted. "Why, only the hottest girl in the school, of course."
"Oh. I'm pretty sure Ollie's straight."
"Oh, not Ollie. Marlene."
Sirius whipped his head around at Ava. "McKinnon?!"
"How many other Marlenes do you know, Black?" Ava said, giggling.
"You know, James once said he thought Marlene was a lesbian, so..."
...
Four of the five Marauders were sitting in the common room, enjoying themselves. Sirius walked in, seeming in an odd mood. He seemed slightly dejected, but quite cheery as well.
"What did Ava say?" Ollie asked quietly.
Sirius looked at Ollie, shocked. "Oh... how much did you see?"
"I heard you serenading her, but not the after," she replied, a sly grin forming.
"That makes sense," Sirius said shortly. "Well, you can understand the words, can't you?"
"I wasn't paying any fucking attention to the lyrics, you moron."
"Oh- Well, she's a lesbian, apparently."
Peter, who had been drawing on a spare roll of parchment, looked up so fast that the jerk of his hand knocked over the ink bottle next to him. Remus, who had been reading a book, dropped it so fast it landed with an incredibly loud thunk. James, who was taking a sip of water, spat it out all over Remus's front. Ollie, though, stared at him for a moment before bursting into hysterical laughter.
Through her teary-eyed laughter, she said, "So- so you're so feminine that a lesbian will date you- for three months? That's- that's golden, I can't- it's too..." She trailed off into silent giggles.
All of her four friends gaped at her- Remus knew that she liked Sirius, James really thought she did, and Peter didn't fully understand why they seemed so close, but not really like how the rest of them were close.
"Wow, that's rude," Sirius answered.
"Sorry, what's rude?" Marlene asked, popping up from behind the couch. James jumped, Remus lazily looked around, Peter looked up at her from the floor where he always sat. Ollie looked at her from the corner of her eye, a slight smirk showing on her face. Sirius turned around sadly.
"Ava doesn't actually like boys. She's a lesbian," he explained. "Too bad I don't know any other lesbians."
Marlene made brief eye contact with Ollie. "I wouldn't be so sure, but okay."
Ollie's eyes widened. "Marlene, what-"
"Um, explain?" James said, looking at Marlene, as if challenging her.
"Just that you do know another lesbian, but we can just leave it at that," Ollie answered quickly.
"Well," Remus said, feigning calmness, "we know it's not Ollie- right?" He looked at Ollie, confused.
"No, it's me, you fucking idiots," Marlene replied, climbing over the back of the couch and sitting on the edge. The boys all exchanged looks while Ollie avoided eye contact rather carefully. "That- That's okay, though, right?"
The group sat in a slightly awkward silence. Remus spoke first. "Of course it is. I don't even like g- you that way, so I don't really care anyway."
Sirius answered, "Yeah, it's fine. Just a little bit unexpected."
"That's cool," Peter said.
James looked at his feet. He had a strained expression on his face. After a moment he said tautly, "Yeah, it's okay. It'll just take a minute to- to get used to it."
The boys all looked somewhat expectantly at Ollie, who was looking at Marlene. "She's a lesbian too," she murmured. Marlene's eyes lit up at this.
"Well, then, I've got a quest. I'll see you cuties later," Marlene said, making her fingers look like pistols and pointing them at the general group.
After she skipped away, the boys all looked at Ollie. "It's none of you guys' business whether she likes boys or girls, so I didn't tell you."
"How long have you known?" Remus asked.
"She told me... about a month ago. It was while you guys were together, full swing," Ollie answered, gesturing towards Sirius.
Remus pushed his floppy brown hair out of his eyes. "That's so weird. I wonder if they're gonna get together," he speculated aloud.
James snorted. "Well, duh. They may very well be the only lesbians out in our year. Of course they'll get together. Are you daft, Remus?"
"I think they'll be cute together," Peter said softly. "What if they get married? That would be so adorable."
"Yeah, it would be," Ollie and Sirius said in accidental unison.
The group all laughed a little at this, all glad for the ending of that chapter in their lives.
