Sirius was staring at Pierre as if he was trying to explode him with his mind. He hated him so much.
It was irrational, he knew, but that didn't change anything. Ollie was the only girl he would love that way, and she was sitting with him, laughing at his jokes, helping him with his homework. The only thing Sirius found himself hating more than watching Pierre and Ollie was his jealousy.
"Sirius," Remus said, breaking his focus. "Stop giving Pierre that death stare."
Sirius looked down at his Potions homework. Describe the process to synthesize a love potion other than Amortentia. What a waste of time.
"I'm sick of this," James said putting his quill down in frustration. "I'm gonna go find Evans."
"Try not to turn her eyebrows green this time," Remus joked. A few days earlier, James had been trying to mess with Sirius, but ended up hitting Lily with the spell. Needless to say, she was irritated, and James was extremely apologetic about the incident.
"It was an accident!" James insisted, standing up and abandoning his textbook and half written essay on the library table.
It was a cold afternoon in early November, and Lily wasn't in the Library, so James wondered where she could be. He wanted to talk to her, about anything, and also to apologize again for the eyebrows incident.
After not finding her in the Gryffindor common room, the Great Hall, and Slughorn's class, James was about to give up and return to the library in defeat. He decided to walk around a little bit first and hope to cross paths with her.
It was walking through the corridor where McGonagall's classroom was located was where James came across something horrifying.
In one of the large open windows, James saw the one thing he wished he would never see. Lily Evans, in her warm sweater and corduroy skirt, snogging the Hufflepuff keeper, Albert Volkov.
James stared for a moment in shock before turning on his heel and walking away, back to the Great Hall. He sat alone and took a roll from the bowl in front of him, pulling it apart with his hands and eating it.
If James was annoying and cocky, Volkov was the worst. Hufflepuff rarely beat Gryffindor in Quidditch, and only won three games the whole year so far, and seventh year Volkov was so obnoxious about it. He would brag that he personally stopped James from getting his team high enough on the board to win, and he would do all the things Lily found most unattractive in James, but to a much more severe degree.
How did this end up happening? James threw his half eaten roll onto his plate and got up again, leaving the Great Hall, sulking.
He couldn't tell the Marauders about this. Oh, that would be humiliating. And it's not like he could talk to Lily about it. It was quite honestly none of his business, and he knew that, but still. Him? Really?
Of course he couldn't write home about this or anything. His poor mother would pity him and probably write the school to let him come home.
That's what brought him back to the corridor. He walked past the love of his life snogging that idiot beefcake, and knocked on the door of McGonagall's office. It was a Wednesday afternoon, and he didn't think she had class right then anyways. And who else could he come to?
"Come in," McGonagall's shrill voice answered, so James opened the door and entered the small room, closing it behind him. "Mr. Potter?"
"Hi Professor," James replied stiffly.
"What can I help you with?" McGonagall asked him.
"I just wanted to talk to you, if that's alright," James said, fiddling with his hands.
"Of course, Potter. Have a biscuit, and sit down."
James did just that, sitting in front of McGonagall and taking a biscuit. He ate some of it quietly.
"What did you want to talk about, Potter?" his professor asked after the moment of silence.
"Evans."
"Miss Evans? What about her?"
James paused before continuing. "I wanted to talk to her so I was looking for her, and I found her in the corridor... snogging someone else."
McGonagall frowned. "Mr. Potter, why are you telling me this?"
At that, James felt his eyes begin to water, and a lump formed in his throat as he spoke. "I've been in love with her since we were eleven and she hasn't given a damn about me this whole time, and I finally got her attention, and just when I think I finally have a real chance with her, she goes and snogs Volkov of all people! And I know it's really not my business she can go out with whoever she likes, but she can do so much better than Volkov! He's the Hufflepuff Keeper! He's awful at Quidditch, he's so rude and obnoxious, and he's not very good looking, to be frank with you, Professor."
"Mr. Potter," McGonagall said again, "in what way does this concern me?"
"I didn't know who else I could come to."
McGonagall's slight annoyance turned into worry. "I see. Well I don't know what I'm supposed to do about this.
James smiled. "I wasn't asking you to do anything about it, Professor, I just needed to say something about it to someone."
"Alright then, Potter, in that case, I'm sure everything will work out fine. And if it really bothers you, you can talk to Miss Evans about it," McGonagall said with a wry smile. "And you always know where to find me, if you need anything."
"Thank you, Professor," James said, standing up. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"See you in class, Mr. Potter. Oh, and one word of advice, if you want Evans to go out with you, maybe next time don't turn her eyebrows green." McGonagall laughed at her joke.
"I wasn't trying to the first time either, for the record," James said before opening the door to the office and leaving.
Lily was sitting on a bench beside the office alone, reading a book, and she looked up when James exited.
