Ollie had curled herself into an armchair like a cat, waking up early in the afternoon. Sirius drowsily opened his eyes from on the couch, yawning and stretching.
"It's so much easier to sleep when Peter isn't snoring so loud," he commented, grinning at Ollie. Ollie grinned right back. She unfurled her body, lifting her arms over her head and stretching out. She leaned forward slightly, her back popping loudly.
"D'you want some food?" she asked, picking something from between her teeth. The small chunk of dark green was in between her fingers when-
"Damn it, those dratted leaves, they never stay in my mouth, either. Peter managed to keep it in for the whole month, and James is about week out from finally getting it. I had to start over the other day," Sirius complained.
"Ugh, I'll go get another one," Ollie groaned, rising and going to the girl's dormitory. She returned a few minutes later, a sour expression on her face.
"I hate that I've gotten used to talking with it," Ollie said bitterly, running a hand through her hair. "It tastes like shit."
"I know," Sirius agreed, rising to stand like Ollie. "Let's get something to eat, shall we?"
"Sure," Ollie said, reaching up and fixing a strand of her friend's hair. They walked, side by side, to the Great Hall, occasionally cracking jokes that made the portraits look appalled. At the entrance, they looked around for their friends.
They weren't in the room. Instead, the duo found a spot near the end of Gryffindor table and piled food on the plates that seemed to magically appear before them.
Ollie and Sirius ate quickly, not saying a word to each other. After finishing the food on her plate (eating delicately so as to not disturb the leaf in her mouth), Ollie looked up to see a pretty face locked on her own.
It was a girl at the Slytherin table, Ollie could tell, and she sat there fishing for the name in her brain as the girl looked away. Her skin was a fair warm color, her short chocolate brown hair parted at the side in curls. Ollie recognized the stunning face as someone in her Defense Against the Dark Arts class, but couldn't place who exactly it was.
The lovely girl stood up. She started toward the Gryffindor table, Sirius looking up just in time to see her stop in front of them.
"Hey, uhm, Sato and Black, right?" the girl said, clearly knowing she was right. Ollie nodded skeptically in response while Sirius looked slightly confused. "I'm Victoria Wilson. We have Defense together, right?" Again, Wilson clearly knew they had this class together.
"Yeah, I think so, why?" Ollie replied, obviously knowing damn well they had Defense togther.
"Well, we have O.W.L.s coming up in a few months," Wilson continued. "And I know a bit about you, Sato."
"Oh?" Ollie said, raising an eyebrow. "Go on."
"You and that tall boy- Lupin, isn't it? You're the studious type; you're probably fun to be around, but you guys care about your grades. You guys would be devastated if you failed your O.W.L.s, wouldn't you?"
"Devastated wouldn't be the right word, but I'd probably be upset, yeah."
"Well, I know that I can't afford to fail my Charms or Transfiguration exams, and I'm confident that I'll ace my Defense and Potions exams."
"Okay? Why are you telling me this?" Ollie said, knowing exactly what Wilson was about to propose.
The girl leaned forward, a mischievous glint in her silver-blue eyes. "I'll help you guys out with your studying if you'll help me out. I'm sure you guys don't need it, but I do. And I'll pay you guys back too, of course. However you need m-"
"I'll help you out. I'll ask Remus if he wants to," Ollie accepted, cutting Wilson off.
"Thanks, Sato. Also, your bangs look really nice on you," Wilson said, about to walk away.
"Wait- Just call me Ollie. Everyone does."
"Okay, then, Ollie. See you around." Wilson turned away and left the Great Hall, Ollie staring after her.
"Wow, she's pretty, isn't she?" Ollie remarked, Sirius looking oddly at her. "And she said my bangs look nice!"
"Yeah, I guess so," Sirius said, looking suspiciously at the dazed look on Ollie's face. "C'mon, let's go and find the guys."
"Alright," Ollie agreed, smiling at the thought of the compliment. She was used to compliments; practically everyday someone would stop her in the hallway to tell her her eyeliner was on point, or her nails looked nice, or her hair looked good.
So why was she so worked up over this one in particular? She'd gotten compliments on her hair before. In third year, when she got bangs over the Christmas holidays, Remus and James showered her with praise. In fourth year, when she refined them to the way they were now, Peter was the first to tell her that it suited her. Even random upperclassmen would comment on her appearance.
But when Wilson said it- Ollie couldn't get her mind to stop racing in circles.
"Ollie?" someone said, snapping her out of her trance. Sirius was looking over at her, having taken a hold of her wrist. "Are you alright?"
"Yeah, I'm okay," Ollie said lightly, her thoughts still swirling.
"Because you look like you're about to pass out. I think we should get you to a bed."
"Don't worry about," Ollie replied. Just then, a group of three boys rounded the corner.
James was in front; his jet-black curls were messy, his light tan skin glowing in the torchlight, his round glasses askew. Behind him, Remus towered over him, his skin light and scarred, his shaggy brown hair tied back with a bit of string. Short and squat, Peter was next to James, his pale chubby face peeking out from under his fluffy mousy hair.
"Woah, Ollie are you okay?" Peter said immediately, rushing over to his friend.
Ollie managed to pull herself out of her daze, though she could never say exactly how. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"You look really pale. Like, super pale. Your skin's not even that light. Do you need to sit down?" In his concern, it was a wonder that Peter wasn't stumbling over his words.
"I'm alright, Peter," Ollie said firmly, and that was the end of it.
For the rest of the day, no one brought it up again, but all of the boys tried to figure out what had put their friend in that odd trance. Ollie, however, was trying the hardest to understand the fluttery feeling in her stomach when those cadet grey eyes looked into her own.
