"Did I interrupt something?" Sirius asked, looking at James and Viktoria. From the shock and guilt on both of their faces, he assumed the worst. "I can pick up my Transfiguration homework later."
James shook his head. "No, you can stay. Actually, maybe you should."
Sirius closed the door fully, and he sat on his bed. Viktoria stared at him in disbelief.
"Were you guys snogging or-" he began, James's face immediately scrunching in disgust.
"No, ew, why would you think that?" he said indignantly. "No offense, Viktoria."
The girl didn't say a word, nor did her expression change.
"Why is there so much tension in the air, then?" Sirius continued.
"Do you want to explain?" James asked, looking at Vitoria.
She finally spoke again. "You're Sirius Black."
The two boys glanced at each other. Sirius then smiled awkwardly, and said, "Yes, that's me. I already knew that." Maybe there was something wrong with her?
"My name is Viktoria. Viktoria Ali," she said stiffly.
"It's nice to meet you, but, um, why exactly are you and my best mate alone in his dorm? And why have I never seen you around before?" Sirius continued, James looking on quietly.
"You've probably never seen me because I shouldn't technically exist yet," Viktoria said slowly.
"What exactly does that mean?" Sirius asked.
"It's November, right? I've tried to keep up with the days but I lost track a couple weeks ago."
"Well, it's the very end of October," James said. "Halloween is in three days."
"Okay, so I was close," Viktoria said, furrowing her brow. "Yeah, so I haven't been born yet."
Sirius stared in disbelief. Was she stupid or just insane. Of course, he wasn't trying to be mean in his head, but still, he couldn't help but wonder. "Obviously that's not true," he said carefully, "seeing as you're standing in front of me right now."
"I stole a Time Turner," the girl continued. "Where I'm from, it's 1994. I'm going to be born pretty soon, actually."
"Okay, why are you here then?" Sirius asked. James was just watching the conversation unfold in silence.
Viktoria started to explain herself, and as soon as she opened her mouth, the words just tumbled out. "I was raised by my grandmother. And I love her so, so much. She's all I've ever known, just the two of us and Merlin in the loft over our shop. She's my father's mother, and she practically raised all of the kids on our street. I never knew my parents. Mana never liked my mother, though, she always told me she snatched away my father.
"He's a good man, my father. Or that's what I've always been told. And that's what I'd like to continue to believe. He and my mother met at school and fell in love. They married and had me. Against the law, against all odds.
"Mama never held any resentment for me, though. Well, she's never shown any. Probably because I look like my father. I have his face, his eyes. My mother looked almost nothing like me.
"Prim Wilshire. If that name sounds familiar, that's because she was the first- and only- Veela to attend Hogwarts. And she's my mother.
"I used that Granger girl's Time Turner to come back to the 70s so I could find my parents, but apparently, I'm more than a few years off. But hey, it's a start right?"
The silence when she finished talking was deafening. After a few minutes, James spoke again.
"I found her when she showed up and so I've been helping her hide for a few weeks now. I've also been helping her research her parents and such to figure out what year she should try for."
"I'm sorry, what?" Sirius said, his face slightly paler and contorted in confusion. "Absolutely none of this makes sense."
"I know it doesn't make sense," Viktoria said, her voice almost pleading. "But I need to know my parents, and I'll do whatever I have to, damn it."
"Is there anything I can do to help you guys?" Sirius asked. As shocking and baffling as this whole situation was, just like James, Sirius couldn't help being intrigued by this mesmerizing stranger. And this intrigue carried a certain sadness for her as well.
And who was Sirius Black if he didn't help his friends? If James deemed this girl's problem worth helping with- which, after hearing it, Sirius knew he would have had the same reaction if he'd stumbled across her first- then on Merlin, this problem was worth solving.
After all, hearing this girl recount how she never knew her parents but knowing their history made Sirius curious about what exactly happened. Why did they leave this girl? Did they have a choice in the matter? What happened to them and why hasn't their daughter met them?
On top of the sadness that hung around the story, the whole situation was a mystery. And after all, mysteries should be solved.
