I couldn't believe who was there with Alaska...

I saw Squints talking to her and she made a disgusted face and looked back at a closed door. I read her lips and she told him, "He likes me?"

"Yeah, he does," Squints had whispered back. Then they looked startled and the door had opened.

Yeah-Yeah walked out. I already knew he liked Alaska, but why had he told Squints but not his sister?

The lump in my throat dissolved and transformed into anger. I felt my cheeks grow hot with rage.

I stomped up the stairs and onto her porch and rapped my knuckles on the door.

I watched Alaska awkwardly make her way to the door and I watched Squints and my brother be extremely perverted and stare at her butt.

She opened the door and her face light up with relief. "Hi Chrissy!" she greeted me.

"Hey Laska, you busy?" I asked.

"No, no, not at all!" she answered.

"You wanna go out with some friends and I to get a burger?" I offered.

She glanced over at Yeah-Yeah and Squints and said, "That'd be great."

"Okay, let's go," I chirped cheerfully.

"Okay," she replied. "Guys, I think it's time you leave, I'm heading out right now."

"Can we go?" Squints asked hopefully.

"Yeah yeah, can we?" Yeah-Yeah agreed.

She looked at me emotionless and I got the message that she wanted me to answer their question.

"No, as a matter of fact, you cannot," I told them.

"What, why not?" my brother complained.

"Because, only Alaska and I are going," I snapped as brusquely as I possibly could.

"Listen Doll-Face," Squints told me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders and guiding me aside from them and whispered, "Yeah-Yeah, your brother, really liked Alaska."

"So?" I asked.

"So, don't ruin this opportunity for him," he replied.

"She doesn't even like him," I retorted.

"Then who does she like?"

I hesitated and I felt my body language become awkward. "I can't tell you," I said.

"Aw c'mon," he pleaded.

"I can't tell you," I repeated, clenching my teeth.

"Why not?" he whined.

"I just can't, okay?" I said, resisting the urge to punch him. "Come on Alaska, let's go."

"Okay," she said cheerfully.

"Can we go or not?" Squints asked impatiently.

"Yeah yeah, can we?" Yeah-Yeah agreed.

Alaska gave me a frustrated look and said, "Fine you guys can come."

"Yes!" Squints whispered and Yeah-Yeah mumbled, "Yeah yeah!"

We walked to mine and Yeah-Yeah's and picked up our bikes. Squints tide mine and I sat in the handlebars and Yeah-Yeah rode his, with Alaska sitting on his handles.

"So where are we going?" Yeah-Yeah asked with a smile on his face, and I knew why.

"Chubby's," I said trying to forget about what Timmy'd said.

The three of them were chattering and I just stared off into space. I was deep in thought, but was interrupted when Yeah-Yeah said, "You okay Chrissy?"

"Yeah, just girl problems," I answered emotionlessly. They shrugged and chattered until we got to the diner. I hopped off the handlebars and locked my bike to the rack as my brother did the same.

Alaska took me aside and asked, "What's wrong?"

"I don't think we should talk about it right now," I said, merely cocking my head at Squints and Yeah-Yeah who were whispering themselves.

She nodded and said, "Let's just forget about boys tonight, shall we?"

"That'll be kinda hard," I grumbled, following her as she walked towards the two boys and they abruptly stopped whispering. "Let's go in," I said forcing a smile.

"Okay," they all agreed and we walked in. I looked around for a jukebox and found something else. Something I didn't want Alaska to see...

Timmy's POV

It'd been about half an hour since Christian left. I was laying on my top bunk replaying the scene in my mind. Why'd she get so upset? I was trying to find out how I could get her to want me like I wanted her without giving away how I felt.

Tommy walked in and said, "Mom called; she said dad and her had to go to Canada because something about grandma, so they'll be gone for about a week.

"She said you were in charge and if we need help to go to Christian's and Yeah-Yeah's house. She also said to be good."

"Okay," I said impassively. I watch Tommy grab some pajamas and walk to the bathroom and change. As he walked I called, "Remember to be neat, you know how mom gets when something's not perfect."

"Okay," he called back.

"Okay," I repeated to myself.

A couple of minutes later he returned and threw himself on the bottom bunk.

"Timmy, is something wrong?" he asked me concerned.

"Chrissy, when she came over I asked her how to impress my dream girl, and I was talking about her being my dream girl without saying who it was, and she ran out," I said on the verge of tears, my voice unsteady. "Why'd she do that?"

"I dunno, maybe she remembered something she had to do?" he suggested.

"I guess," I said. "Tommy, turn the light off, we should go to sleep."

He turned the lamp off and we talked about Babe Ruth until we passed out.
