I was the first person to wake up, but I couldn't stop thinking about Benny. I mean, I didn't like him. I barely knew the kid, but I couldn't say I didn't grow the least bit fond of him after only talking to him for hours. Yes he was a good looking guy, but for all I know he could be a total jerk. I mean, he could eat puppies for dinner!
Though very unlikely, I have a right to be cautious. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm being ridiculous, but it's possible. Besides, today's The Fourth of July and I should focus on spending time with my family and I'm only fourteen. Clearly my parents wouldn't allow me to date and I wouldn't just break their rules for some boy I just met. Plus, if my sister found out she'd rat me out so fast it'd make your head spin.
"Tina?" Scotty asked. "Are you okay? You've been staring into space for a while now."
"Huh? What? Oh yeah, yeah I'm fine," I told him. "Who else is awake?"
"Me, Ham, Chrissy, and Laska," he said.
"Well, I'm gonna get ready," I told him and grabbed my bag. "Where is the bathroom?"
"First door to your left," he pointed at the hallway.
"Okay, thanks." I walked into the bathroom and brushed my teeth and hair, washed my face, and got dressed. You know, your basic morning routine. I only spent about 5 minutes getting ready, but when I came out everyone was awake and fighting over the control. And when I say everyone I mean Chrissy and Yeah-Yeah.
"Give me the remote!" Yeah-Yeah exclaimed, trying to pry the remote out of Chrissy's grip.
"No!" she argued. "Mickey's on!"
"Nobody cares about stupid Mickey!" Yeah-Yeah told her.
And in that moment Alan knew he f*cked up.
"Chrissy," Alaska warned.
I felt like something bad was gonna happen, so I sat on the couch and interrupted everything. "So what's for breakfast?"
"Cereal, cereal, or cereal. What would you like?" Ham said.
"Um cereal, I guess," I smiled.
"Cool, now serve yourself," he snickered.
I groaned and walked over to the kitchen. I was about to reach in the pantry to look for wherever they kept their cereal, when Benny stopped me.
"Here, I got it for you," he said, grabbing a bowl out of a cabinet and setting it on the counter. "Go sit down."
I sat at the table and watched him pull out the cereal from the pantry and grab the milk from the fridge. He served the cereal and milk for me and opened a drawer to get me a spoon. He even brought it over to me.
"Why are you being so nice to me?" I asked him.
"Why not?" he questioned and sat next to me.
I felt the blood rush to my face and suddenly became very self-conscious. "Because we barely know each other."
He shrugged. "Well I'd like to get to know you. I mean, we only talked for hours last night."
I smiled. "I'd like to get to know you too. You seem like a great friend."
Benny's POV
It was already two o'clock and Tina's words still lingered in my brain. Friends. She friend-zoned me. Now I know how Yeah-Yeah feels, and man this is not a great feeling.
I couldn't concentrate at all. This was baseball. I love baseball, but because of one word I couldn't even think about it right now.
At least it was my turn to bat. This was my strong suit. I watched Kenny pitch the ball right down the middle, but I didn't even try to swing.
"Strike one!" Ham called and threw the ball back. "You okay Benny, man?"
"Yeah, I'm great," I lied.
Next thing I knew Kenny pitched another one and it was too high, and I swung at it.
"Strike two!" Ham called. "You sure you're okay?"
"Yes! I'm fine!" I snapped at him.
Kenny pitched another, a little low but high enough to look like a strike and I swung as hard as I could.
I expected to hear the crack of the bat, but I didn't. I looked at Ham. He had the ball in his glove and I looked to everyone else. Their jaws were dropped and their eyes wide. I just struck out.
Ham was about to call the last strike, but I waved him off. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
After a bit, Alaska broke the silence. "Let's just call it for the day."
"Yeah, good idea," Chrissy agreed, causing everyone else to agree.
"Yeah yeah, we have the night game anyway," Yeah-Yeah said and we all erupted in "Yeah's."
"So what do we do now?" I asked. Instantly Bertram smirked.
"I got some stuff if you guys wanna try it with me," he told us and he had a mischievous look in his eye. We all shrugged and agreed. "Alright," he said, "but no one tell any adults." He pulled out a small baggy from his pants pocket.
"What is that?" Tina asked.
"Yeah, yeah, what is it?" Yeah-Yeah agreed.
"It's heroin you idiots!" Bertram explained.
"Woah, Bertram, I don't think this is a very good idea," I argued.
"Yeah, where did you even get that from?" Alaska asked.
"It's everywhere! C'mon you guys, one drag won't hurt," he tried to persuade us.
"We're only 14," Timmy said.
"Yeah," Tommy agreed. "And I'm only 13!"
"Everybody does it, so it's probably okay," Bertram insisted.
"But if we want to make it in major league, then we can't," Smalls argued.
"Yeah," Ham agreed with Scotty. "And if I don't make it in the big leagues, then I'm gonna be a wrestler and I need to be as healthy as I can."
"Since when have we cared about the future?" Bertram asked, obviously offended we didn't want to smoke with him.
Everyone shrugged. "Since we realized that we didn't want to die," Chrissy exclaimed.
"Yeah, that stuff can kill you man," Alaska concurred.
"I second that," Tina agreed. "Really Bertram, it's not worth it."
"Whatever," he scoffed and put the heroin back in his pocket. After that, we all just headed home to spend time with our families and get ready for the night game.
